Lance Syme has been working in the cultural heritage industry for in excess of 17 years. Lance is currently the Principal of Kayandel Archaeological Services, a specialist indigenous archaeological consultancy that operates in Australia’s eastern states. Prior to establishing Kayandel Lance was a regular representative of both the Tharawal Local Aboriginal Land Council and the Warrabinga Native Title Claimants Aboriginal Corporation. During his time as a consultant Lance has been involved in projects of varying size and complexity , predominantly within the resources sector but also within the infrastructure and residential development sectors. Lance has extensive experience in managing and conducting Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessments and the development and implementation of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan’s. Lance’s previous experience in representing Aboriginal community interests in heritage projects prior to becoming a consultant archaeologist has provided Lance with a unique perspective of the Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment process. Because of this experience Lance maintains a strong commitment to thorough and transparent Aboriginal community consultation, invariably results in stronger community engagement and project outcomes that achieve both the client needs and the community expectations Having been active exposed to the community.

Currently Lance’s projects include the working with the Saint Vincent and Grenadines National Trust to undertake the relocation of the Yambou 1 Petroglyph site, coordinating the heritage works programs for a number of mining projects throughout Australia and the ongoing maintenance of site records for approximately 900 Aboriginal heritage sites across these projects.

Lance is a Full Member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. (AACAI) and Expert Member of International Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM) and Committee Member of the Australian Rock Art Research Association (AURA).
