Hendry Wan

Hendry Wan is a heritage specialist and placemaking strategist with over 20 years’ experience in state government (Heritage NSW and Department of Education), local government (City of Sydney) and the private sector. He is based in Sydney and is currently a Senior Associate at GML Heritage.

Hendry has an architectural background and has Master degrees in heritage conservation and in urban policy and strategy. He is skilled in advising on strategic heritage frameworks, providing technical heritage advice and heritage assessment of the built environment. He has assessed town and cityscapes, urban and rural precincts, landscapes and streetscapes.

He has been involved in conservation and heritage projects in NSW, Tasmania and the ACT. He delights in being involved in all stages of major projects’ development—from project identification and design, development application and planning assessment through to approvals and delivery. He is experienced in engaging with multiple stakeholders and collaborating with decision-makers in placemaking, particularly for precinct-wide State Significant Development Applications and road, rail and maritime State Significant Infrastructure projects in NSW. In all his work, Hendry seeks to join the dots in heritage place management and integrating heritage places into a broader ‘place’ ecosystem.

His highlights include a 10-year involvement with projects at the Sydney Opera House and an 8-year involvement with the conservation and adaptive re-use of the Locomotive Workshops at South Eveleigh.

Hendry is a Full International ICOMOS Member and is currently the NSW Representative.
