6. [NEW ITEM] ACAHUCH Symposium: Navigating Encounters and Exchanges: Intercolonial trade, industry and labour mobility in Asia Pacific, 1800s – 1950s | 24-26 November 2021
The 5th Annual International Symposium of ACAHUCH
Navigating Encounters and Exchanges: Intercolonial trade, industry and labour mobility in Asia Pacific, 1800s – 1950s
Buildings for industry, agriculture and trade in Australia, the Pacific and South-East Asia share an important but forgotten history of encounter, exchange, and influence. Industrial heritage is also under-represented in World Heritage lists, with the Asia Pacific region poorly represented and global connections between industrial sites insufficiently understood (Falser & Yang, 2001). This symposium addresses these research gaps by providing a forum for academics, archivists, and heritage practitioners to share their examinations of unprecedented buildings for trade and industrial-scale resource extraction across Asia-Pacific’s multiple colonial entities and their successor nation-states.
The symposium will feature international and local keynote speakers as well as panel discussions which explore flows and connections of commodity, craft, labour and expertise between sites and communities across Asia Pacific from 1800s – 1950s and beyond.

10. [NEW ITEM] Release of new technical guide: Mortars: materials, mixes and methods
Mortars: materials, mixes and methods, a guide to repointing mortar joints in older buildings is an essential resource for anyone wishing to repair older stone or brick buildings in Australia. Written by David Young OAM, an acknowledged expert in the use and application of traditional mortars, and supported by the heritage councils of each state, it covers everything you need to know about working with lime mortars.
Lime was the principal binder in mortars and plasters of Australia’s early colonial buildings, and it continued to be used in domestic construction until the mid-twentieth century. However, major changes in building practices after World War II led to the predominant use of cement in mortars. This change led to a decline in understanding of the properties of lime mortars, their important role in porous masonry, as well as the practical aspects of working with lime. This technical guide helps fill this gap.

2021 Hall Annual Lecture: Presenter Emeritus Professor Ian Lilley, The University of Queensland | 23 November, 5.00pm AEST
Archaeology, Heritage and the Heritage of Archaeology
Presenter: Emeritus Professor Ian Lilley FSA FAHA
About the lecture
Archaeological heritage has been big news lately, as the impact of Rio Tinto’s Juukan Gorge debacle continues to reverberate around the planet, hard on the heels of the deliberate destruction of sites in conflicts in Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere. That said, archaeology has been prospering in most parts of the world with the ascent of the heritage industry. A prodigious amount of archaeological work is undertaken every day right around the planet in the name of heritage, employing vastly more archaeologists than all the universities and museums in the world combined.
Driven directly or through ‘trickle-down’ by factors such as the rapid growth of UNESCO’s World Heritage List and the wide influence of the World Bank’s heritage and other safeguards, the future for ‘archaeology-as-heritage’ looks bright. But what is this so-called ‘progress’ doing to archaeology as a discipline? Our claims to scholarly authority and professional integrity are under ever-increasing pressure from planners and developers, descendants and locals, looters and collectors, and politicians and diplomats, few if any of whom have any real understanding of or sympathy for the basics much less the nuances of our craft. So what should we do? This lecture will canvass some of the possibilities, with a focus on Australia’s role on the global stage.
Visit the event website for more information and to register.
