AICOMOS – NSCs, Working and Reference Group News
NSCES Presentation: Water, Water Everywhere | Online | 5.30 pm 2 July 2025
You are invited to the next online Australia ICOMOS National Scientific Committee for Energy and Sustainability (NSCES) meeting on Wednesday 2 July 2025, at 5.30pm (AEST) for a presentation “WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE”.
Water is essential for us to exist, and humans always settle close to water. From earliest times people have managed water both to harness its benefits and reduce its risks. Traditional ways of dealing with water are now having to adapt to a changing climate.
This presentation by Ian Travers and Peter Phillips looks at the work of the recently established ICOMOS ISC Water, and then at the ways in which climate change is affecting water and the impacts that this has on heritage places, such as historic buildings, archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. The presentation also looks at management strategies for dealing with these impacts.
Ian Travers is an archaeologist and CEO of Extent Heritage. He was the first President of the ICOMOS ISC Water and remains active in its development. In 2021, Ian led the team that prepared the Heritage Council of Victoria’s key climate change principles (since also adopted by the NSW Heritage Council) and its vulnerability assessment guidance.
Peter Phillips is a conservation architect and principal of Orwell & Peter Phillips, a practice that has been working with historic buildings since the 1950s. Peter was a founding member of the ICOMOS ISCES, and helped to prepare the Draft Climate Change Preparedness Action Plan for Heritage NSW in 2023.
Please RSVP to us and we will send a meeting link:

NEW Update to Conservation Guidelines for Building Surveyors
Australia ICOMOS published the Conservation Guidelines (available on our website) in 2002, in response to the first editions of the Building Code of Australia. Since then, there have been numerous changes to the BCA, including whole new areas of regulation such as energy conservation. The NSW Heritage Council’s Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) has suggested that an updated edition of the Guidelines would be a useful tool to assist building certifiers in dealing with older buildings.
Peter Phillips, one of the original authors of the Guidelines, has been authorised by the Executive Committee to begin work on an update. He would like to establish a small working group to review the Guidelines and propose suitable case studies. The working group will consist of Australia ICOMOS members from a range of State and Territories, including an EC representative, as well as some members from TAP.
If you are interested in joining the working group, and especially if you are from outside NSW, please send an expression of interest to Peter at peter@opp.net.au

ICOMOS EPWG Summer School 2025 “Olympia Park Munich: Conceptualising a Conservation Management Plan” | Munich | 4-7 Sept 2025
Under the title “Olympic Park Munich: Conceptualising a Conservation Management Plan”, the Emerging Professionals Working Group of ICOMOS Germany, in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich, is hosting this year’s Summer School. The event will take place from September 4 to 7 in Munich.
The 2025 Summer School is dedicated to Munich’s Olympic Park, an iconic 20th-century heritage site currently included on Germany’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage nomination. The park is notable for its exceptional architectural and landscape design and its complex cultural significance, both tangible and intangible. As the venue of the 1972 Olympic Games, it not only represents a global event but also continues to shape urban development and social identity today.
The Summer School offers young professionals and students a unique opportunity to engage directly with the ongoing development of a Conservation Management Plan (CMP)—a key requirement for World Heritage nomination. Participants will explore the multifaceted nature of the site: as a place for leisure and culture, an architectural landmark, a social space, and a monument of identity.
The four-day programme includes an introduction and guided tour, expert lectures, and intensive group work. The group work will focus on the topics of architecture and landscape, Future Use, Human Scale, and the iconic Tent Roof Structure.
Applications to participate will be considered until 15th July. Please use the following link for more information and application criteria: https://www.icomos.de/icomos-epwg-summer-school-2025-quotolympiapark-munich-conceptualising-a-conservation-management-plan-quot_a_443.html

NEW NSW State Register | Heritage Listing of Harry Seidler Ithaca Gardens Apartment Block
The Minns Labor Government has added one of the finest and best-preserved examples of modernist building design by legendary Sydney architect Harry Seidler to the State Heritage Register.
Ithaca Gardens in Elizabeth Bay was Seidler’s first apartment block, departing from his prized work on single residences and winning the prestigious Architecture and Arts Award in 1960.
Ithaca Gardens in Elizabeth Bay was Seidler’s first apartment block, departing from his prized work on single residences and winning the prestigious Architecture and Arts Award in 1960.
Architectural features include the creative use of concrete to provide function and emulate art, as demonstrated in the folded concrete canopy and garage structure. The building materials including blond brick, aluminium window frames, railings and awnings, and internal coloured glass and timber cabinetry.
The 10-storey building marked the start of the professional relationship between Seidler and developer Jozef Dusseldorf, founder of Civil and Civic which became Lend Lease, one of Australia’s most prolific construction firms.
This partnership produced some of the most iconic structures in NSW, demonstrating the pair’s collaborative approach to innovative design outcomes.
Ithaca Gardens is one of the earliest modernist apartments in NSW and demonstrated a change in the architectural landscape that went on to drive new trends in the 1960s. The design harnessed principles developed in single residential dwellings and office buildings, and applied these to high-density living.
Listing Ithaca Gardens to the State Heritage Register will help preserve the future of this renowned building.
Heritage NSW has worked closely with property owners to tailor the listing to their needs. Site-specific exemptions ensure regular works such as individual apartment renovations can go ahead without specific heritage approvals.
Quote attributable to NSW Minister for Heritage Penny Sharpe:
“Ithaca Gardens holds huge cultural and historical significance, showcasing Harry Seidler’s evolution as an architect and his lasting impact on Sydney and other parts of NSW.
“It is an early example of ‘density done well’ and shows some of the earliest Australian examples of outstanding apartment living.
“Adding Ithaca Gardens to the State Heritage Register will recognise and preserve this architectural gem for generations to come.

NEW Exhibition // Taglietti: Life in Design | Canberra Museum & Gallery | 7 June 2025-22 February 2026
Discover the world of Italian-Australian architect, Enrico Taglietti (1926–2019), a Global Architect and visionary whose design principles shaped modern Australian architecture and left an indelible imprint on Canberra, the city he and his wife Franca chose to call home. Celebrating the centenary of Taglietti’s birth, Taglietti: Life in Design explores the life, philosophy, and legacy of one of Australia’s most original architects.
From childhood experiences in Ethiopia to his family background and studies in Milan, and finally to Australia, Taglietti’s global journey profoundly influenced his distinctive design approach. His work blends a sculptural use of light, thoughtful materiality, and bold spatial experiences. The exhibition presents two intertwined narratives: visitors will experience Taglietti’s unique design language through specially created spatial interventions that highlight seven key principles central to his practice. These immersive interventions complement displays of original architectural drawings, models, photographs, rarely seen personal objects, fashion, and furniture, revealing how Taglietti’s creative ethos and holistic approach permeated every aspect of his life.
Trace the compelling story of Taglietti’s arrival in Australia through the groundbreaking 1955 Italy in Australia exhibition at David Jones, Sydney, which introduced the latest Milanese design to a globally curious audience and demonstrated the soft power of design diplomacy. Encounter iconic projects from Canberra’s Cinema Center to Sydney’s St Anthony’s Parish Church, and gain insight into some of his extraordinary residential designs. Highlighting his collaborative spirit, international acclaim, and significant contribution to Canberra’s architectural identity, Taglietti: Life in Design is a landmark exhibition celebrating a true visionary in architecture and design.

PUBLICATIONS
NEW Concrete: Case Studies in Conservation Practice | Edited by Catherine Croft and Susan Macdonald | Getty Publications Virtual Library
This timely volume brings together fourteen case studies that address the challenges of conserving the twentieth century’s most ubiquitous building material—concrete. Following a meeting of international heritage conservation professionals in 2013, the need for recent, thorough, and well-vetted case studies on conserving twentieth century heritage became clear. This book answers that need and kicks off a new series, Conserving Modern Heritage, aimed at sharing best practices.
The projects selected represent a range of building typologies, uses, and sizes, from the high-rise housing blocks of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation and public buildings such as London’s National Theatre to small monuments like the structures at Dudley Zoological Gardens and a sculpture by Donald Judd. The projects also represent a range of environmental and economic contexts. Some projects benefit from high levels of heritage protection and access to funding, while others have had to negotiate conservation with stringent cost limitations. All follow a rigorous conservation approach, beginning with a process of investigation and diagnosis to identify causes and target repairs, balanced with conservation requirements to preserve significance.
