1. [NEW ITEM] Australia ICOMOS welcomes new Secretariat Officer

It is a great pleasure to introduce Elizabeth Gralton as our new Secretariat Officer.

Elizabeth is in the final stages of a Masters of Cultural Materials Conservation at the University of Melbourne. She has a BA and PhD in French history from the University of Western Australia. Her PhD research focused on the Paris Universal Exhibitions of the nineteenth century. She has taught both French and history at several Australian universities. Most recently she has been working as a social research and evaluation consultant for an Indigenous-owned research consultancy.

Elizabeth has started her training with Georgia Meros and they will have a crossover period until the end of this month. She looks forward to working with the Australia ICOMOS Executive Committee and is excited to work for an organisation that possesses such a wealth of heritage expertise and knowledge in its member base.

3. [NEW ITEM] Heritage Pathways 2021, Online Symposium, 20 November 2021 – CALL FOR VIDEOS | deadline 15 November

 

 

Australia ICOMOS is seeking video submissions for Heritage Pathways 2021, a half-day symposium exploring issues that are important to early-career professionals and academics, as well as innovations in cultural heritage practice. The aim of the submission of films for Heritage Pathways 2021 is to connect with each other through different mediums that encourage different kinds of engagement and practice. Treat these submissions as creative pieces, technical materials guides, project showcases and more.

Film submissions should be:

  • Between 5 and 8 minutes in length
  • In a landscape 16:9 aspect ratio – this means the short films can be comfortably viewed on a computer or television screen
  • Resolution should be 1920×1080 px or greater, this will ensure a standard minimum quality
  • Frame rate is at Director’s discretion

These guidelines have been created to ensure the barrier for participation does not require further investment than the smart phone in your pocket. To make your film submission please email the Heritage Pathways Team with the subject line ‘Film Submission’, and you will be forwarded a Dropbox link to upload your work.

4. [NEW ITEM] EOI invited: Youth Forum Sub-Committee for GA2023 | deadline 12 November

Expressions of interest are invited to join the ‘Youth Forum Sub-committee’ of the ICOMOS General Assembly (GA), which will be held in Sydney in September 2023. 

The Youth Forum is a key component of GA2023 and is to be held on the preceding weekend to the main GA programme (from Friday 1 September to the Sunday 3 September 2023). 

The Youth Forum will welcome young and emerging heritage professionals from across the world and we encourage expressions of interest from energetic and engaged people interested in helping to organise this event.

The EOI is open to both Australia ICOMOS members and non-members, and while there is no age/experience threshold, we anticipate that the Youth Forum Sub-committee would reflect the demographic and diversity attending the Youth Forum.

Expressions are welcome from Australia wide, noting that the event will be Sydney based.

The sub-committee will meet bi-monthly commencing in February 2022 until September 2022 and then monthly until the GA in September 2023. Meetings will be held virtually.  

Expressions of interest should:

  • be no more than 200 words in length;
  • state the reason why the applicant seeks appointment;
  • indicate relevant skills, experience and interest of the applicant; and
  • be sent by 12 November 2021 to the ICOMOS GA2023 team by email.

The ICOMOS ISC on Water and Heritage is organizing the following webinar.

As a contribution to the UNFCCC COP 26 to be held in Glasgow, UK (November 2021) and to kickstart the Community of Practitioners on Water and Heritage, GCA’s Water Adaptation Community (WAC) and ISC Water are organising a dialogue among spiritual leaders, who will discuss water-related spirituality as a source of inspiration and wisdom to cope with climate change impacts on the water cycle – such as the increase in the frequency of droughts, floods and storms. This will be a precursor to the dialogue among spiritual leaders to be held at the UN Water Decade Mid Term Review, to be held in New York (2023).

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Warragamba Dam Raising Project for flood mitigation is on public exhibition from the 29 September 2021, for a period of 45 days closing on the 12 November 2021, during which public submissions will be received.

9. [NEW ITEM] Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee | call for nominations closes 10 November 2021

The NSW Government is currently advertising for nominations for membership of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee (ACHAC). There are four positions that are required to be filled during this process.

ACHAC advises the Minister and Department on matters relating to the identification, assessment and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage in NSW. Nominations are invited to fill current and future vacancies that may arise.

Nominees must be:

  • Nominees of Aboriginal elders groups; or
  • Registered Native Title Claimants; or
  • Aboriginal owners listed on the register under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983.

Nominees must demonstrate:

  • Involvement in cultural heritage matters in their local community; and
  • An understanding of cultural heritage management issues.

The Longford Academy is looking forward to once again running training courses on building conservation, set in the sublime landscape of the World Heritage-listed Woolmers and Brickendon Estates in Longford, Tasmania. COVID-permitting, we plan two courses for 2022:

  • Summer School in Building Conservation: 6–12 February 2022 (inclusive)
  • Autumn: Practical Building Conservation: 9–14 May 2022 (inclusive)

Heritage Pathways 2021, Online Symposium, 20 November 2021 – CALL FOR PAPERS | deadline 29 October

 

 

Join Australia ICOMOS for Heritage Pathways 2021, a half-day symposium exploring issues that are important to early-career professionals and academics, as well as innovations in cultural heritage practice. We are seeking short papers, or ‘snapshots’, that critically respond to one or more of the following provocations:

  • Where is the cultural heritage profession currently and where are we going?
  • What impact has the COVID-19 pandemic had on the profession, including successive lockdowns in some states and territories?
  • What new approaches and issues are important to emerging cultural heritage professionals and academics looking towards the future?
  • How is current research and policy responding to issues of social justice, sustainability and climate change, intangible values, Reconciliation and decolonising places and approaches?
  • How can we ensure that cultural heritage is relevant to all people within the community, beyond professional or academic disciplines?
  • How can established cultural heritage practitioners work with early career professionals to future-proof the cultural heritage profession?

Want to be involved?

Please submit a 100 word abstract (6-minute presentation) and 50 word bio to the Heritage Pathways Team by email by Friday 29 October 2021. We welcome submissions from postgraduate candidates in both coursework and research programs, and early career professionals and practitioners working in or alongside the cultural heritage field. In addition to the short papers/snapshot session, the symposium will also feature video submissions, with further information regarding this to be announced shortly.

Note: The symposium will be open to attendees at all stages of their careers. Watch this space for further information regarding ticketing.

In the midst of the COVID pandemic the 2021 Fremantle Studies Day explores issues of migration including the need for and consequences of managing the arrival of people into Australia, the potential for issues like racism to emerge and the impact of other cultures on the very fabric of our town. AICCM Agents of Change series: #8: DISASTERS – 28 October, 7-8.30pm AEDT

Agents of Change: 10 Agents Over 10 Months

The AICCM Preventive Special Interest Group is hosting a series of online forums. Following on from the successful 2019 conference Managing Risks to Collections, 10 AGENTS OVER 10 MONTHS will explore and expand the traditional 10 Agents of Deterioration to encompass relevant and topical themes – such as the climate change, bushfires, repatriation, and COVID.

The series will run from March to December covering one Agent per month, and has been developed to enable our Conservation community to continue to share knowledge, insights and experiences virtually through talks, presentations, workshops, panel discussions and hybrid events throughout 2021.

The recently released IPCC 6th Assessment Report on the physical basis of climate change has forcefully foregrounded how climate extremes and natural disasters will increasingly be part of our daily and seasonal lives. Australian Heritage Grants Program – applications close 28 October

The Australian Heritage Grants Program provides $5.347 million per annum with a call for applications each year. This is the fourth year of the program. All National Heritage listed places recognised for their natural, Indigenous, or historic heritage values may be eligible for funding of between $25,000 and $400,000 under this program.

National Heritage listed places will be supported through the protection and promotion of their listed values by strengthening the conservation, management and recognition of these places, and through public and community engagement. In recognition of the continuing effects of COVID-19, activities such as re-establishing or maintaining activities directly impacted by COVID-19 may also be supported through this round to aid in economic recovery.

Blue Plaques NSW program – nominations through local MPs and MLCs closes 31 October

This recently announced NSW Government program aims to foster curiosity and appreciation of our heritage by recognising the places, personalities and historical events that matter to communities.

We encourage you to contact the office of your local Member of Parliament (MP) or a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) as soon as possible to put forward your ideas for Blue Plaques.

MPs and MLCs will have until 31 October 2021 to submit their nominations to Heritage NSW for consideration.

Getty Conservation Guest Scholars Program – apply by 1 November

The Conservation Guest Scholars Program provides opportunities for professionals to pursue research on topics that bring new knowledge and fresh perspectives to the field of conservation. Guest Scholar grants are for established scholars, or individuals who have attained distinction in their fields. Applications are welcome from researchers of all nationalities working in conservation, historic preservation, heritage science, and related fields.

Applications for the 2022-2023 residency period are now available.

WA Heritage Council Heritage Grants Program – applications close 10 December

The WA Heritage Council’s Heritage Grants Program is now open for applications. The program offers funding assistance to projects that conserve or celebrate State Registered Heritage places, and supports investment in the preservation of WA’s rich history. The Minister for Heritage announced the opening of the program on 30 September, the full media release can be read here.

[NEW] SITUATION VACANT Professorship, Conservation and Restoration of Technical and Industrial Heritage, Berlin University of Applied Sciences [DEADLINE: 31 October]

HTW Berlin is looking for a person who will represent the topic area in terms of teaching and research and develop it further through their own interdisciplinary projects. The following key areas of expertise are required:

  • Application and development of conservation and restoration methods for technical and industrial heritage on the basis of materials science, technological and historical property research
  • Research and implementation of conservation and restoration concepts for large-scale objects and technical collections including material combinations, particularly properties featuring composites of metal(s), polymers or other organic objects
  • Research and implementation of preventive conservation for large objects experience presentations, in storage conditions and in outdoor areas, including monitoring

Restoration and conservation experience with challenging issues in collaboration with corresponding institutions, interdisciplinary cooperation and evidence of innovative approaches and concepts, eg. through third-party funded projects and publication, is desirable. The successful applicant is expected to maintain the active supervision and continuation of the existing reference collection of synthetic and natural materials.
