1. [NEW ITEM] Vale Lazar Shumanov

Our colleagues at ICOMOS Macedonia recently informed the wider ICOMOS community of the passing of Lazar Shumanov, see message below.

Australia ICOMOS offers its deepest condolences to Lazar’s family, friends and colleagues.

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I would like to inform the ICOMOS International Secretariat of the passing of the President of ICOMOS Macedonia, Lazar Shumanov, today May 9, 2021 after a short illness with Covid-19.

Lazar Shumanov, PhD, (1940-2021) was a long-term President of ICOMOS-Macedonia and also one of its founders and first President in 1994. He dedicated his whole life to the protection of cultural heritage, working for three decades in the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Macedonia as an architect-conservator, and after retirement, until the very end of his life, he continued to work actively and contribute to this sphere via ICOMOS Macedonia. He left behind numerous implemented projects for conservation and restoration of immovable cultural heritage in the country, as well as  professional publications, including the important study on the seismic strengthening of Byzantine churches in Macedonia, for which he received the state award “Goce Delchev” in 2005. He was recognized as a valued professional for the protection of cultural heritage worldwide, participating in numerous international projects.

But mostly, he had dedicated his life to ICOMOS and the spreading of its mission and values, and had been an active and energetic member within the global ICOMOS community for decades. He was a member of the Executive Board of the International Committee of ICOMOS (2005-2008) and also a member of the ICOMOS Academy.

Dr. Shumanov had also been a member of the ICCROM Council (1997-2001) and a visiting lecturer at the Centre for Conservation Studies, IoAAS, The University of York, UK (where he defended his doctoral dissertation) and at the Ècole Nationale Superiéure d’Architecture, University of Marseille, France.

Kind regards,

Kristina Biceva
Vice President of ICOMOS Macedonia

Rebuilding community resilience and cultural connections
Presented by Ben Wyatt, former WA Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs

While public infrastructure, such as the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme, has been hugely important to our state’s economic development, it has also had a wide-scale, ongoing impact on Aboriginal people and their culture. In recent years, the legal recognition of Aboriginal people’s inherent rights has resulted in significant changes in the relationship between traditional owners and the State of Western Australia.

Come and hear from Ben Wyatt as he discusses how these rights have ensured the inclusion of Aboriginal people and played a vital role in rebuilding community resilience, economic independence and social and cultural connections.

We look forward to you joining us at this thought-provoking event.

3rd International Symposium on Geotechnical Engineering for the Preservation Of Monuments and Historic Sites
22-24 June 2022, Italy

Heritage Summer School, Slovenia, 21-24 June 2021 | application deadline: 15 May

The first University of Ljubljana Sustainable Heritage Summer School entitled Responsible Renovation of Cultural Heritage Buildings as the Basis of Sustainable and High-quality Living will take place between 21 and 24 June 2021, jointly organised by the Interdisciplinary and Interfaculty Institute of the University of Ljubljana and ICOMOS Slovenia, under the auspices of Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO.

The topic is focused on the current practice of improving the energy performance of 19th and 20th century residential buildings, representing an important potential of sustainable development as well as opportunities for effective implementation of circular economy in practice. As in many cases these buildings are an important part of architectural heritage, our focus will be on the questions of how to preserve the values of this heritage and how to introduce the qualities of contemporary living therein. The renovations must be comprehensive rather than merely involving the addition of thermal insulated envelopes. To achieve the sustainable development goals, thus creating a better life for everyone, we need to establish comprehensive solutions and draw together all stakeholders.

The summer school will include talks by renowned international and Slovenian experts. Dr. Ege Yildirim and Prof. Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Jörg Haspel will focus on presenting the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the significance of preserving the 20th-century architectural heritage; professors and researchers from TU Delft, Prof. Dr. Andy van den Dobbelsteen and Dr. Leo Oorschot, will present the Dutch experience in this field, and through the workshops the activities undertaken in the Netherlands in relation to efficient renovations and improving the energy performance of multi-dwelling buildings, in order to achieve the goals of a carbon-free society by 2050 and preserve the significant architectural heritage.

This summer school is intended for students as well as everyone dealing with the problems in question in practice: experts in heritage protection and energy performance improvement, apartment owners, and various decision-makers both in Slovenia and beyond.

The language of the summer school will be English, the workshops will be also held in Slovenian.

For their participation at the summer school, the students enrolled in the Master’s study programme will be awarded 3 ECTS, the students enrolled in UL’s PhD study programme in Architecture 5 ECTS, while ZAPS members will be awarded 8 points and IZS chartered and supervising engineers will be awarded 3 points for their participation.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation upon completion of the summer school.

The application deadline is 15 May 2021.

SURVEY: COVID impacts on Cultural Heritage and GLAM sectors – extended to 21 May

Help collate data on COVID impacts on Cultural Heritage and GLAM sectors by filling in this survey

As you are aware, the cultural heritage community worldwide is facing new challenges and hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We would therefore like to invite you to participate in a survey that aims to give us a better understanding of the ways in which the pandemic and lockdowns affect our sector, and to help predict long-term concerns and solutions.

This survey forms part of a research project led by Dr Ania Kotarba of Flinders University, Adelaide, South Australia, which aims to identify the direct and indirect impacts (both negative and positive) of COVID-19 on the Australian (and global) cultural heritage sector. The ultimate objective is to document this moment in time to create a set of recommendations for adaptive strategies to similar future crises and ‘readiness’ procedures relating to any subsequent economic fallouts.

The questionnaire takes about 10-15 minutes to complete and you can skip any questions that you feel are irrelevant to you or you do not feel that you can, or want to, provide the answer to.

The survey is carried out by ikapadata, a survey research company. Email Ania Kotarba if you have any questions regarding the survey.

All information provided is confidential. Neither you nor your organisation’s names will be mentioned in any communication or publication. If you would like to receive a follow up email with the results of the survey and associated report, you can add your email address at the end of the questionnaire.

Click on this link to open the questionnaire.

The deadline for participating in the survey is 21 May 2021.

M/C Journal Special Issue: ‘Design’ | call for papers – deadline: 11 June 2021

‘design’

Between its broader sense of intent and that of making a drawing or plan, design appears to be expanding in both meaning and its application. Design is well understood when related to our material culture, where the medium often bears the imprint of the designer/s. Design has moved relatively seamlessly from the physical into the digital world. It makes sense that someone designs the applications that we use and that digital content, just as much as a poster, requires design. Design activities are rarely inseparable from a market economy, but the language of design has infiltrated business more broadly.

World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize – nominations close 15 June

Forward-thinking. Experimental. Bold. Progressive. Innovative. Once recognized for these defining characteristics, significant modern structures around the world often fall victim to material deterioration, perceived obsolescence, and public apathy. As many of these modern buildings are too young to qualify for landmark designation and protection, the need for preservation and increased public awareness of these unique resources is urgent.

In 2008, World Monuments Fund (WMF) launched the biennial World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize with founding sponsor Knoll to celebrate preservation success stories in buildings that are emblematic of the modern movement.

The prize honors contemporary architects, preservationists, planners, and community leaders who have implemented a physical intervention to preserve a threatened modern building or complex. Nominated projects must have been completed in the last ten years, and the site must have faced challenges or threats before it was preserved.

Nominations are now open for the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize until 15 June 2021.
