2. [NEW ITEM] Connecting with Country draft framework released
Over the past four years, the Government Architect NSW (GANSW) has been exploring ways of putting Aboriginal knowledge at the heart of the planning system. A new draft framework, Connecting with Country, follows the release of the ‘Designing with Country’ discussion paper in June 2020.
This draft framework will be piloted through a 12-month program and will include government projects, such as Eurobodalla Hospital (in collaboration with Health Infrastructure). The pilot program aims to significantly increase Aboriginal leadership and participation, ensuring the final Framework (scheduled to be released in 2022) will be guided and endorsed by Aboriginal communities, organisations and built environment experts.
The Draft Framework asks all of us, government, industry and development communities, as well as Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal colleagues, to make a commitment to connect with Country in our work. The goal is to ensure that Aboriginal cultural wisdom and understanding of Country is valued and informs the planning, design and delivery of built environment projects in NSW.
Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Secretary Jim Betts said it provides practical ways for designers, planners, industry and government to create places, buildings and infrastructure that respect and reflect their connection to Aboriginal land.
“Always was, Always will be Aboriginal land – this has depth of meaning far beyond what many non-Aboriginal people understand. Government has a vital role to ensure Aboriginal heritage and culture are embraced and protected in the planning, construction and delivery of projects,” Mr Betts said.
GANSW will be announcing further details relating to the pilot program for the next 12 months, including information sessions, in the coming weeks.

3. [NEW ITEM] A new website aims to take Victoria’s Goldfields to the world
The campaign to put the Central Victorian Goldfields on the World Heritage map took a huge step forward this week with the launch of a new website.
Funded by the Victorian Goldfields Tourism Executive (VGTE), the website is the latest iteration of the bid that has been percolating behind the scenes for several years. It provides fascinating insights into the discovery of gold in Victoria, the world-wide significance of the Victorian goldrush and the epic bid for World Heritage listing.
The Central Victorian Goldfields World Heritage Bid is a partnership between thirteen local governments, regional organisations, academia and the private sector on behalf of the Central Victorian Goldfields community.
The bid aims to share the extraordinary story of Central Victorian Goldfields with people from across the globe and create social, cultural and economic opportunities for every community and person across the region..
The site itself is a treasure trove of historic photos, illustrations and stories. It has scores of useful references and links for scholars, industry stakeholders, tourism operators and community groups.
It is also a functional working tool in the bid development process. It encourages interested parties to register for regular bid updates and invites participation in the creation of a new, overarching regional brand and critical investment opportunities through online surveys and workshops.
To find out more about the bid, jump online and check it out for yourself.

In Situ. Revue des patrimoines journal – Heritage values of 20th century architecture: what recognition?: call for papers | deadline 15 December 2020
CALL FOR PAPERS — Heritage values of 20th century architecture: what recognition? Critical review and international forward-looking vision
The journal In Situ. Revue des patrimoines offers heritage professionals and researchers the opportunity to disseminate and promote the results of their work on the knowledge, conservation and transmission of works and objects for which they are responsible or which they are studying. Its ambition is to promote exchanges between the different players and between the many disciplines that make up the heritage sciences. It makes the knowledge thus produced available to the public.
General context
The heritage values of 20th century architecture, whether they be cultural, social or technical, remain relatively complex to assess, and thus to share, due to lack of perspective and knowledge. The architectural and urban production of the second half of the 20th century was particularly prolific, sometimes remarkable, even exceptional.
The energy, ecological transition, the changing habits and lifestyles are leading to the gradual transformation of this built heritage reaching to the end of its life cycle.
Today, many countries with a post-industrial economy are confronted with the challenge to bring about changes in these buildings and neighbourhoods in order to meet the increasing social demand, without compromising their original architectural interest and qualities.
For more information, visit the In Situ. Revue des patrimoines website.
Deadline
If you would like to contribute to this issue, we thank you for sending us by 15 December 2020 a summary of your proposal with a maximum of 1,500 characters.

This and a number of other instructional guides and factsheets are accessible from the PlanSA portal.
How to have your say
Browse the full Code in its electronic format and submit comments on specific parts of the Code via the ‘Code Feedback Tool’ at this link.

Nominations open – 2022 World Monuments Watch | deadline: 1 March 2021
World Monuments Fund (WMF) is now accepting nominations for the 2022 World Monuments Watch.
The World Monuments Watch is a two-year program that seeks to discover, spotlight, and take action on behalf of heritage places facing challenges or presenting outstanding opportunities of direct relevance to our global society. Every two-year cycle of the Watch includes 25 heritage places from around the world, selected for their cultural significance, the need or opportunity for urgent or timely action, and the potential for World Monuments Fund to make a meaningful difference.
Through the Watch, WMF collaborates with local partners to design and implement targeted conservation programs – including advocacy, planning, education, and physical interventions in the historic built environment. The ultimate goal of the program since its inception has been to improve human well-being through cultural heritage preservation.
The 2022 cycle of the Watch is taking place amidst circumstances that have revealed the profound interconnectedness of our world. Together, we can innovate to create a more harmonious world where the past and present cohabitate, where local communities and their cultural heritage are recognized and respected, and where we and future generations have the capacity to appreciate our history, respect our differences, and better understand each other.
We are looking for nominations with clear potential to respond to the global need to ensure equitable representation for all, and the pressing challenges of climate change and imbalanced tourism.
To learn more about the nomination process, click here.
Submissions will be accepted until Monday 1 March 2021.
