6. Sydney’s industrial heritage – proposed new listings on exhibition for comment
Comments are invited on the City of Sydney’s proposed heritage listing of industrial and warehouse buildings. Sixty-four listings are proposed for more than a hundred industrial sites across two-thirds of our local area, as shown in the attached map. These listings will be on exhibition from 2 June 2015 and open for comment until 30 June 2015. Some of the subject sites are pictured below.
These listings were recommended in a recently completed heritage study; believed to be the first large-scale council study of industrial heritage in New South Wales. This study and the recommended listings seek to better acknowledge the value of this under-recognised form of heritage.

13. Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific (CHCAP) seminar, Melbourne
The next CHCAP seminar at Deakin University will be a presentation by Prof. Andrea Witcomb, Deakin University on “Beyond sentimentality and glorification – using a history of emotions to deal with the horror of war”.
Abstract
In this paper I wish to draw a distinction between emotional histories and a history of emotions in order to tease out the different ways in which emotions are currently being used to shape our response to the legacy of WWI. I will do so through an analysis of two current exhibitions in Melbourne – WWI: Love and Sorrow at Melbourne Museum and the WWI Gallery at the Shrine of Remembrance. I will be concerned with teasing out the uses to is done. To do this, I will be looking closely at the ways in which these exhibitions build relations of affect between visitors and those represented in the exhibition by drawing on particular assemblages of objects, images, places and memories to construct very different relationships to the past.
Date: Wednesday 26 June 2015
Time: 12.00 noon
Venue: Theatre Room, Deakin Prime, City Campus, 3/550 Bourke Street, Melbourne

ICCROM forms an international alliance to assist in Nepal’s cultural recovery
ROME – 5 June 2015 – When news of the massive earthquake in Nepal broke out, ICCROM led an initiative to produce the Kathmandu Cultural Emergency Crowdmap, which received extensive on-the-ground reports about damaged heritage. As a result, an overview of the devastation was pulled together immediately and now an international team is in Kathmandu preparing the groundwork for a sustainable salvage operation.
“Through on-site assessments we have been able to see for ourselves how people in Nepal have come forward to salvage and secure their cultural sites, religious shrines and city squares,” says Aparna Tandon, in charge of the cultural disaster risk programme at ICCROM, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property.
Together with specialists from ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites), ICOM (International Council of Museums), the Smithsonian Institution and the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, they are working closely with the Nepalese Department of Archaeology to devise a strategic plan for aid and recovery to be carried out in coordination with humanitarian efforts.
