6. Melbourne Heritage Action: “Advocacy in the 21st Century” talk, Melbourne, 15 December
How do we advocate for urban heritage in the 21st century? What are the current threats to the heritage of Melbourne’s CBD?
Melbourne Heritage Action (MHA) was formed with the support of the National Trust in the wake of the outcry over the demolition of the Art Deco building Lonsdale House. MHA decided that there needed to be an advocacy group focused on the CBD.
This talk by MHA’s Dr Katrina Grant will look at the past four years of Melbourne Heritage Action, campaigns such as Save the Palace, protection for Melbourne’s laneways, and advocating for protection of interiors. Dr Grant will also discuss how advocacy is changing, and how MHA has built a base of online supporters and how they work with media to get attention on heritage issues.
Space is strictly limited so please REGISTER at this link to book your place.
EVENT DETAILS
- Monday 15 December 2014
- Doors open at 5.00pm, talk starts 6.00pm
- Tasma Gallery, 6 Parliament Place, East Melbourne VIC 3002
- Suggested $5 donation to cover costs
- Drinks served on arrival
TrustTalks are regularly held on the second Monday of each month, and will resume in February 2015. For more information on upcoming TrustTalks visit the new Conservation and Advocacy blog.

7. Celebrate William Charles Vahland in May 2015
Last Tuesday the City of Greater Bendigo notified the media about their intentions to celebrate William Charles Vahland during the National Trust Heritage Festival next year.
Join the city in celebrating Vahland in May 2015. There may be events you’d like to organise in the Goldfields or Melbourne to truly recognise how important this man was to 19th century architecture in Australia.
Some ideas for May 2015:
- A walk, bike, or car tour of Vahland buildings in Bendigo, our municipality or other shires – night tours could be as fun as day ones
- Stories of working in Vahland buildings – eg. all the nurses at the Bendigo Hospital – are the buildings haunted?
- Talks on architecture, or on the man himself, or the many architects he inspired & their buildings like the Hotel Shamrock
- Open houses of Vahland buildings
- Workshops on how to restore old houses, how to make old houses sustainable
- Sessions on how to research old houses – have you got a Vahland, Beebe etc. designed house?
- Find your German family history
- How to research newspapers in Trove to find architectural tenders, obituaries of people like Vahland
- Display of records related to Vahland, how Germans were treated at the start of WWI
- Histories of Germans and viticulture in our area – apparently Vahland had a winery in Elmore, but the Germans are attributed with beginning the wine industry in Heathcote & surrounds
- Exhibits of collections, plans, records, portraits, photos of his buildings or the man, or any of his students
If you can organise an event soon, please upload the details to the National Trust website by 24 December. This will mean your event may go in the statewide publication – an opportunity to get exposure for Vahland and your organisation.

9. New publication on Sir J.J. Talbot Hobbs

UWA Publishing has just released a new book by Australia ICOMOS member Dr John Taylor, Between Duty and Design: The Architect-Soldier Sir J.J. Talbot Hobbs. This is the first extensive biography of Hobbs’s architectural work, also covering his military career which saw him become Australia’s highest ranking solider in Europe after World War I.
Hobbs’ contribution to the built landscape of Western Australia – and to Australian war memorials in France and Belgium – is impossible to overlook. It dominates public spaces as well as domestic and business streetscapes. His stellar designs are familiar to many but Hobbs the man is largely forgotten. Who was J.J. Talbot Hobbs, considered to be of such importance at the time of his death that a memorial was built in one of the most prominent places in Perth?
Taylor’s biography of the man, soldier and architect, is meticulously researched and illustrated throughout with photos and plans, highlighting Hobbs’ place as a citizen of national importance.
Between Duty and Design is available in bookstores or from the UWA Publishing website (with free postage).

13. New publication on Conserving Cultural Landscapes
Conserving Cultural Landscapes – Challenges and New Directions
Edited by Ken Taylor, Archer St. Clair, Nora J. Mitchell
New approaches to both cultural landscapes and historic urban landscapes increasingly recognize the need to guide future change, rather than simply protecting the fabric of the past. Challenging traditional notions of historic preservation, Conserving Cultural Landscapes takes a dynamic multifaceted approach to conservation. It builds on the premise that a successful approach to urban and cultural landscape conservation recognizes cultural as well as natural values, sustains traditional connections to place, and engages people in stewardship where they live and work. It brings together academics within the humanities and humanistic social sciences, conservation and preservation professionals, practitioners, and stakeholders to rethink the meaning and practice of cultural heritage conservation, encourage international cooperation, and stimulate collaborative research and scholarship.

14. Heritage Values Network
The Heritage Values Network (H@V) is a research collaboration that is funded in the framework of the EU Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage. The network is designed to start a European cross-disciplinary discussion between heritage practitioners, researchers and policy-makers on “heritage values” through the conduct of three workshops in Eindhoven, Oslo and Barcelona.
The consortium partners of the project; University College London, Leiden University, Eindhoven University of Technology, the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research in Oslo and the University of Barcelona, will examine the ways in which a conceptual and methodological framework for identifying, assessing and measuring the values that individuals or groups of people apply to heritage (“heritage values”) can be developed and shared among heritage organizations and researchers across Europe.
More information in regards to the project and those involved can be found at this link.

A Darwin contact can be provided and some assistance with event arrangements could be made available via the NT and QLD ICOMOS State Rep.
If you are interested, and travelling to Darwin in the near future, please contact Jacqui Pearce (Nt & QLD ICOMOS Rep) by sending an email to the Secretariat office.
