3. FREE Public Lecture: Thursday 10 November, Foreshore House (SHFA), Sydney, NSW
Just Add Water: The Role of Press Barons in Growing Western U.S. Cities at Public Expense
Dr Gray Brechin, fresh from the recent Australia ICOMOS ‘Watermarks, Water’s Heritage Conference’ in Melbourne, will repeat his keynote address at the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, Foreshore House, 66 Harrington Street in The Rocks at 6.00 pm.
The lecture titled draws on his highly regarded book, “Imperial San Francisco, Urban Power, Earthly Ruin” (2006). As he says, “In the arid American West, land without an assured and abundant supply of water had little value while the cost of moving rivers great distances was so great as to make extensive development unprofitable. Those who owned both presses and real estate were ideally placed to persuade the public to shoulder the burden to their own benefit. By doing so, they built not only such cities as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, but dynastic fortunes as well.”
(Note: Guests must arrive by 5.45 pm to enter the building before it closes for security reasons.) Numbers are limited.
Please RSVP by 4:30pm on Wednesday 9th November to Kerime Danis by e-mail or telephone (02) 8270 3530.
Dr Brechin will also give a public lecture titled ‘A Dazzling Range of Styles: The Public Architecture of the New Deal in the United States’ on Friday, 11th November at 7.30 pm at the AIA NSW headquarters, ‘Tusculum’, 3 Manning Street, Potts Point for the 20th Century Heritage Society. For full details, bookings and costs, download the Dr Gray Brechin TALK flier, which also includes details of how to access his interview with Alan Saunders, ABC Radio National on 26 Oct 2011.

4. Symposium: Donald Horne Institute for Cultural Heritage, Canberra
The recovery of the Kuwait National Museum, Kirsty Norman, UCL
Kuwait National Museum’s collections were removed by the Iraqi government during the invasion and occupation of Kuwait in 1990‐1991, and it had been thought unlikely that they would be seen again. However, thanks to UN negotiations, the collections were located, and a team from Kuwait was able to go to Baghdad in late 1991—the first representatives of Kuwait to set foot on Iraqi soil since the invasion. The result was one of the most successful museum restitution projects since World War Two.
Kirsty Norman is a Principal Consultant to the Centre for Applied Archaeology at UCL, and is currently working on management planning and cultural heritage projects in Kosovo, Turkmenistan and Abu Dhabi.
Date & Time: Friday 18 November 2011, 5.00pm (followed by refreshments and finger food 6.00 to 7.00pm)
Location: Talk in 6C35‐, Drinks in Donald Horne Institute for Cultural Heritage, 7C05 University of Canberra.
RSVP for catering purposes by Monday 15 November. Refer to the Invitation to Symposium flier for full details and map.
