Members and guests who are not already attending the Watermarks conference are invited to join the Executive Committee from 6pm at the Conference Welcome Reception, to be held at the same venue as the AGM. Tickets to the Welcome Reception are $35 per person, payable by cash (only) at the door.

2. Final call for entries to Watermarks Photographic Competition!!
The deadline is fast approaching to enter images in the photo competition for the Australia ICOMOS and National Trusts of Australia Watermarks: Water’s Heritage conference. The water-themed photo entries will be displayed during the conference, 28-29 October, at the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre.
Competition entries, comprising a print of each image (up to A4 format), a medium-res digital version (0.5-2 MB) and an entry form, must be submitted by Monday, 17 October 2011 (with an option to hand-deliver the prints at the conference venue on Friday, 28 October, at 8.30 am).
Details about the three themed entry categories, detailed terms and conditions and the entry form are found on the conference website. Queries should be directed to the Competition Co-ordinator, Aaron Murphy via email.

3. Review of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006
The Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (the Act) commenced operation on 28 May 2007. It is the Victorian government’s legislation for protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage.
This review is being conducted according to Section 193 of the Act which requires the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs to review the Act’s ‘efficacy and efficiency’ by 28 May 2012.
The review is aimed at refining and improving the Act’s operation with the benefit of five years experience.
Written submissions are invited by 25 November 2011.

4. Australia ICOMOS – Canberra Talks Series
Beloved Modern: really useful conservation initiatives

The ICOMOS International Committee ISC on Twentieth Century Heritage pursues an active agenda of guideline development, advocacy and professional support. This talk will examine current committee initiatives to support the conservation of Twentieth century heritage places, an often under-represented area in survey and management programs locally and internationally.
Sheridan Burke is a director of Godden Mackay Logan, heritage consultants and heads its Canberra office. She is involved in the practical conservation planning and management of modern heritage properties as diverse as Lake Burley Griffin, Robben Island, the Sydney Opera House and the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. She is an active and long term member of ICOMOS Australia, a former international Executive Committee member and Vice President and she is currently President of the ISC20C.
Members and the public are welcome: Refreshments will be available appropriate to the talk’s topic! This is part of a series of talks organised by Australia ICOMOS.

The Australia ICOMOS Secretariat will be staffed at a reduced level between 3 – 28 November inclusive.
Thank you to all Australia ICOMOS members who have renewed their membership thus far – it is much appreciated. Please note that membership renewals and publication orders will not be processed during the above time period.
The E-news will still be published. Please ensure all submissions for the E-news are submitted by 2pm Thursdays – this deadline will be strictly adhered to.
Though the Secretariat will be staffed intermittently, responses to queries, etc may take longer than usual.

8. Request for participation in online survey – WA-based archaeologists
Dear Colleagues,
I am currently undertaking a research project that explores and critiques current methodologies used and attitudes towards archaeological significance assessments in Western Australia, with a particular focus on Indigenous sites and the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.
I am seeking the participation of archaeologists who work in Western Australia to complete the online survey.
Please note that this survey is only available for a short period and closes on the 28 October 2011.
I would encourage all archaeologists who have practiced in Western Australia at any stage to complete the survey, as I would like a broad representation.
This project is being undertaking in partial fulfilment of a Masters of Applied Cultural Heritage through Curtin University in Perth and has been approved by the Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), approval number BE-64-2011.

9. Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) new publication
GCI’s Heritage Values, Stakeholders, and Consensus Building project is now available on the web.
The publication is a didactic case study examining ways to deal with values, significance, and stakeholders in the management of Jarash archaeological site in Jordan. The publication was produced through a collaborative project of the GCI and the Jordanian Department of Antiquities. The case study is a resource for heritage educators and students learning to use a values-based process for management decision making and for forming consensus building strategies.
An electronic version of the Jarash Case Study is available.
A companion volume, Teaching Materials, is available to educators for download by registering online from the above weblink. Print editions of the case study are available in limited supply and may be obtained by teachers by contacting the GCI, or may be purchased in a print-on-demand format through online vendor Lulu.

The project is currently exploring the adaptation of consensus building and dispute resolution concepts and strategies to the heritage field, and to promote the integration of those concepts and strategies into heritage education, training, and practice.

11. Heritage Victoria Planning Alerts
There is a new ‘beta’ website available called Planning Alerts (approx 54 municipalities covered in Victoria).
Planning Alerts a free service which searches as many planning authority websites as it can find and emails you details of applications near you. The aim of this to enable shared scrutiny of what is being built (and knocked down) in peoples’ communities.
PlanningAlerts.org.au is brought to you by the charity the OpenAustralia Foundation. The initial prototype was developed with financial assistance from the Australian Government 2.0 Taskforce. It was adapted for Australia by Matthew Landauer and Katherine Szuminska, and is based on the UK Planning Alerts, built by Richard Pope, Mikel Maron, Sam Smith, Duncan Pares, Tom Hughes and Andy Armstrong.

12. UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards 2012 – call for entries
Entries are now being accepted for the 2012 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
In addition to the conservation awards, the “Jury Commendation for Innovation” will also be considered for newly-built structures which demonstrate outstanding architectural design that is well-integrated into historic contexts.
The 2012 Awards cycle marks a milestone for the programme, after successful implementation over the first twelve years. With support from the Macau Foundation, the Awards programme is now being enhanced to have even greater impact in raising awareness about exemplary practices in conserving heritage sites around the region.
The deadline for receipt of materials is 31 March 2012.

The Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) at Old Parliament House is looking for an experienced cultural heritage professional for the role of Assistant Manager, Heritage. The role is integral to the operations of MoAD and plays a key role in managing the heritage values of the place and its collections.
