2. International Scientific Committee on Twentieth Century Heritage: “The Madrid Document”

In June, the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Twentieth Century Heritage – ISC20C met with the Architecture faculty of ETSAM University in Madrid to discuss the need for the development of the “Intervention Principles for 20th Century Architectural Heritage”. It was a very lively debate, with a wide range of international perspectives, some very needful of such a text for consent authorities, others referring to existing charters as adequate. The engagement of students from the University in the meetings and the professors as lecturers was very fruitful The conclusions of the meeting and associated conference were expressed in “The Madrid Document”.

Click the link to read The Madrid Document – Final

It’s part of the development by ISC20C of guidelines for the conservation of heritage sites of the twentieth century during 2011–2012. The Madrid Document focuses on the subject of guiding intervention and change for places of the Twentieth Century Architectural Heritage “. While it specifically applies to architectural heritage in all its forms, many of its concepts may equally apply to other types of twentieth-century heritage. The Madrid Document recognises existing heritage conservation documents[i], and also identifies many of the issues specifically involved in the conservation of architectural heritage.

All comments would be most welcome, it will be discussed again at the ISC20C next meeting in November at the GA in Paris.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

10. International Conference on Preventive Conservation of Architectural Heritage

International Conference on Preventive Conservation of Architectural Heritage
29-30 October 2011
Nanjing, China

The challenge identified in the conservation field today is about assuring heritage preservation through preventive conservation, maintenance and monitoring based strategies. Timely identification and correction of defects can prevent major consequential damage, which may lead to  heavy investments in order to bring the listed or valuable non listed building back into a good state of repair. Monitoring systems allow public  authorities, owners and site managers to ascertain that maintenance is carried out on a regular basis and that the budgets are spent effectively at  the long run, also after restoration. When regular maintenance is carried out the preservation of historic buildings will be more cost effective at the long run. As a result of systematic collection of information during the regular inspections (monitoring of the state of repair) it becomes possible to compare and monitor the state of preservation of the cultural heritage “stock”. Collected statistic data can also be used as a management tool as well as for research.

As the annual symposium of the UNESCO Chair on Preventive Conservation, Monitoring, Maintenance of Monuments and Sites, this conference is held by the Key Laboratory of Urban and Architectural Heritage Conservation at Southeast University (China), in cooperation with UNESCO Asia-Pacific World Heritage Training and Research Sub-center in Suzhou(China), The Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC) at the K.U.Leuven (Belgium) and Monumentenwacht Vlaanderen vzw (Belgium).

Conference themes

  1. the history and framework of preventive conservation
  2. the applicable technologies and successful practices of preventive conservation, monitoring and maintenance of architectural heritage
  3. the social aspects of preventive conservation of architectural heritage: public participation, social and economic policies, management
  4. the traditional maintenance system of architectural heritage in Asia-pacific area
  5. disaster prevention for architectural heritage
