1. Australia ICOMOS – Canberra Talk Series: note correction in date

Archaeology as Place Memory: considering archaeology and place making in the north eastern United States and Quebec
Tracy Ireland

In this talk Tracy will explore how urban archaeological places are created and experienced in the north eastern United States and Quebec, and compare this with recent research on comparative sites in Australia and New Zealand. While there is extensive international literature on best practice for archaeological conservation and preservation in situ, there is more limited discussion of the meanings of the places created and how they are experienced and understood by communities. Tracy has been working towards understanding how people experience these places and how this intersects with place and identity in postcolonial contexts, where historical solid ground is so often sought as a counter to political and cultural debates about how and why the past matters!

Tracy Ireland is an archaeologist and heritage researcher and has been the Director of the Donald Horne Institute for Cultural Heritage, at the University of Canberra, since 2009. Tracy previously led the Canberra office of Godden Mackay Logan, Heritage Consultants. She is currently working on a project looking at the conservation of historical archaeological remains in situ called ‘Material Memories’, funded by a UC Deputy Vice Chancellor’s Fellowship. As part of her research Tracy visited the United States, Canada and Denmark in April and May 2011.

Members and the public are welcome. Refreshments will be available appropriate to the topic of the talk! This is part of a series of talks organised by Australia ICOMOS.

Time & Date: 5.00-6.30 pm, Thursday 25 August 2011 (not Thursday 24 as previously stated) – the talk will start at 5.30pm
Venue: Menzies Room, National Archives of Australia, East Block, Queen Victoria Terrace, Parkes (enter from Kings Avenue side)
RSVP: To Marilyn Truscott

2. International Scientific Committee on Twentieth Century Heritage: “The Madrid Document”

In June, the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Twentieth Century Heritage – ISC20C met with the Architecture faculty of ETSAM University in Madrid to discuss the need for the development of the “Intervention Principles for 20th Century Architectural Heritage”. It was a very lively debate, with a wide range of international perspectives, some very needful of such a text for consent authorities, others referring to existing charters as adequate. The engagement of students from the University in the meetings and the professors as lecturers was very fruitful The conclusions of the meeting and associated conference were expressed in “The Madrid Document”.

Click the link to read The Madrid Document – Final

It’s part of the development by ISC20C of guidelines for the conservation of heritage sites of the twentieth century during 2011–2012. The Madrid Document focuses on the subject of guiding intervention and change for places of the Twentieth Century Architectural Heritage “. While it specifically applies to architectural heritage in all its forms, many of its concepts may equally apply to other types of twentieth-century heritage. The Madrid Document recognises existing heritage conservation documents[i], and also identifies many of the issues specifically involved in the conservation of architectural heritage.

All comments would be most welcome, it will be discussed again at the ISC20C next meeting in November at the GA in Paris.

Look forward to hearing from you all.
