1. Watermarks, Water’s Heritage conference, October 2011 – call for contributions: further information available

Call for Contributions

The Watermarks conference committee is now calling for contributions in three categories: as fully refereed academic papers; as professional papers; and as snapshots. There are six themes:

  • Theme 1 – Water Beginnings – Indigenous use of water and waterways
  • Theme 2 – European Arrival – exploration, early settlement and squatting
  • Theme 3 – Working Water – agriculture, aquaculture, irrigation, industry and power
  • Theme 4 – Moving Water – water supply and sewerage, water collection, transport and communication
  • Theme 5 – Too Much or Not Enough – floods, storms and cyclones, droughts, fire protection and environmental conservation
  • Theme 6 – Celebrating Water – tourism, recreation, designed features and landscapes, and heritage recognition

The deadlines are:

  • Submission of abstracts for papers and snapshots – Friday 15 April 2011
  • Notification of successful submissions – Friday 29 April 2011
  • Submission of academic papers Friday 12 August 2011
  • Submission of professional papers Friday 9 September 2011
  • Submission of snapshots Friday 9 September 2011
  • Submission of all revised texts so they can be burnt onto the conference CD – Friday 30 September 2011

6. ‘A Year in the Field’ of the Getty Conservation Institute’s Field Projects Department

The Getty Conservation Institute Field Projects Department’s has published its first issue of A Year in the Field, which provides a snapshot of our work during the 2009-10 financial year. The department currently has sixteen model projects under way that aim to meet the GCI’s mission to advance conservation practice internationally.

The departments’ purpose is to advance conservation practice worldwide through the development and implementation of model fi eld projects that incorporate strong research, planning and educational objectives. In all projects, the GCI works with local partners to build local knowledge, skills and experience and ensure sustainability.

7. First independent international assessment mission for Egyptian Heritage

From February 12 to 16, a first independent international assessment mission for Egyptian Heritage visited the Cairo region. The objective of the mission was to assess possible damage and looting attempts to Egyptian Heritage sites and museums after the recent unrests – in order to document the situation, to state damages incurred and to encourage the parties involved to further efforts in protecting the invaluable cultural heritage of Egypt.

The civil-military assessment mission was carried out by Blue Shield (Association of National Committees of the Blue Shield (ANCBS) President Karl von Habsburg) and the International Military Cultural Resources Work Group (Chairman Drs Joris Kila). It was supported by ICOM Disaster Relief Task Force (Dr. Thomas Schuler). Karl von Habsburg and Dr. Joris Kila went to Egypt, Dr. Thomas Schuler coordinated the mission from Germany and did background research and networking.

8. 16th International Conference on Cultural Heritage and New Technologies – call for papers

The Stadtarchäologie Wien (Urban Archaeology of Vienna) is organising the 16th International Conference on Cultural Heritage and New Technologies, to be held at the City Hall of Vienna, Austria from 14-16 November 2011.

The main topic of this Conference is “Urban Archaeology and Prospection”.

9. PhD scholarship at the Australian Centre for Indigenous History

Deepening Histories of Place: Exploring indigenous landscapes of national and international significance

The Australian Centre for Indigenous History, located in the School of History at the Australian National University, invites applications for an Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) scholarship leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The scholarship is funded via the Australian Research Council. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the PhD candidate will participate in research into the Indigenous histories of sites in the Top End of the Northern Territory.

The Project

The project will investigate the social and environmental links creating historical ‘highways’ of understanding in specific landscapes, and will create innovative models for Indigenous and landscape-focused historical interpretation. The student will work directly with Chief Investigators, including Professor Ann McGrath, Shino Konishi, Peter Read and Luke Taylor. In addition, the student will receive support from staff of the project Partner Organisations. These comprise NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change, Director of National Parks (Australia), National Film and Sound Archives and Ronin Films. The University of Sydney and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies are also collaborating organizations.

The scholar will be required to have a background in history or a similar social science discipline. The applicant will also be expected to be interested in developing histories in multi-media formats.

A demonstrated knowledge of and interest in Indigenous Australian communities and people is required.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are particularly encouraged to apply.

The scholarship includes a stipend of $27,222 per annum (tax free) for three years. As well as project funding support being available for the student’s travel and other project-related expenses, the student will be eligible for standard College of Arts and Social Sciences research funding.

Eligibility

Applicants must be Australian Citizens or permanent residents of Australia who meet admission requirements for entry into a PhD research program at The Australian National University.

Criteria for Selection

Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2A (or equivalent) degree in History. The University may relax these academic requirements where a candidate has developed considerable research experience.

Our multi-disciplinary team provides services ranging from conservation and adaptive re-use advice, skilled liaison with government bodies throughout NSW, through to the preparation of impact statements, conservation management plans, archival recordings, cultural tourism and interpretation, in addition to Land and Environment Court appeals. We have a broad base of private, corporate and government clients, offering the opportunity to become involved in a wide range of challenging projects.

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Heritage Consultant/Conservation Architect who can work both independently and as part of a medium sized team of skilled professional staff. The successful applicant will be one who has a real passion for heritage, as well as extensive experience in the assessment and management of heritage buildings and sites.

You will have considerable experience in the heritage field, specializing in conservation architecture. You will have had prior experience in complex assessments, a familiarity with the relevant legislation and excellent project delivery skills. You will also have a strong track record of establishing trusted advisor/client relationships. Your role will include the provision of responsible, pragmatic and creative expert heritage advice to clients, architectural colleagues and building contractors.

The ideal applicant for this position will have:

  • Relevant professional qualification/s
  • Minimum five years experience in Australian architecture/conservation practice
  • Familiarity with traditional building construction methods and materials
  • Experience in adaptive re-use projects
  • Familiarity with New South Wales heritage legislation
  • Skills to liaise and negotiate with government agencies, clients, architects and the community to facilitate positive heritage outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare reports, proposals and submissions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and balance priorities

Desirable but not essential:

  • Architectural qualifications
  • Post-graduate qualifications in Heritage Conservation, Conservation Architecture or other related conservation fields
  • Experience in the preparation of conservation works schedules and reports
  • Australia ICOMOS membership
