1. Season’s greetings from Australia ICOMOS
On behalf of the Executive Committee I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable and safe festive season. Australia ICOMOS has a big year coming up in 2011, including our intent to complete a strategic plan, a conference in Melbourne in October, participation in the General Assembly in Paris later in the year, and our goal of achieving a GA here in Australia in 2014. I would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions over the last year, and particularly Georgia Meros for her unceasing and extraordinary endeavours as our Secretariat Officer including the production of this E-news. Best wishes to all.
Dr Jane Harrington

4. Scoping Tasmania’s heritage skills – opportunity to have your say
The Centre for Heritage at Oatlands is up an running and needs your input
Southern Midlands Council has established the Centre as a not-for-profit business which aims to identify heritage skills shortages, offer training programs and help boost Tasmania’s stock of available tradespeople.
The Centre, in partnership with Heritage Tasmania, is currently scoping skills deficiencies though a survey. The survey aims to identify skills shortages for particular trades and understand how people would like to learn these skills. It also aims to identify possible tutors and presenters of courses who may wish to share their skills and experience.
The Centre is interested in hearing from you. To participate in the survey, click here.
The survey is open until 27 January 2011.
For further information email the heritage section of the Southern Midlands Council.

5. Invitation to join the Historic Environment Editorial Committee
Historic Environment, the journal of Australia ICOMOS, is published by a small committee of Sydney-based Icomites led by Editor Tim Winter. E-Mail News readers will be aware that the Book Review editor, Caitlin Allen, has recently resigned from the committee, and earlier this year Susan Jackson-Stepowski had to resign due to other commitments. We are therefore inviting any ICOMOS members who would be interested in joining the Editorial Committee to submit a brief expression of interest. You would need to have some understanding and interest in publishing academic journals, and for logistical reasons you would need to be based in Sydney. The role of the committee it to assist the Editor in publishing the journal, and the key tasks are attending committee meetings (4-6 times a year), developing themes for upcoming volumes, liaising with authors, sourcing referees and generally working to keep to the publication schedule of three volumes a year. Please email Peter Romey, the Historic Environment Editorial Committee Coordinator if you are interested.

To be held at the Victorian Archives Centre (North Melbourne) on Wednesday 23 February 2011.
This workshop is a free one-day event for volunteers from ex-service organisations, local historical societies, community museums and other community groups who care for veterans heritage collections. As this will be a repeat of the August 2010 workshop, preference will be given to organisations and people who did not participate in the August workshop. There is a limit of two representatives per organisation.
For further information, see the Veterans Heritage Workshop flyer.

7. Philippine Heritage benefits from Building Training
On Thursday 9 December 2011, architectural conservator and educator Dr David Mason presented the final of the 2010 Australia ICOMOS Canberra talks. David spoke about the Escuela Taller Intramuros, Manila, Philippines, where he is a technical instructor.
An Escuela Taller is a place to teach building crafts and practical heritage skills, including masonry and carpentry. The concept originated in Spain during a period of economic decline and high unemployment, and Escuela Taller Intramuros is the first Escuela Taller in Asia. The location, Intramuros, is a poor community near the centre of Manila, in an area enclosed by Spanish-era fortifications. David described the progress of the first graduate intake of Escuela Taller Intramuros from its inauguration in March 2009 to their recent graduation. Students were provided with vocationally certified skills, first in a workshop and then tested in practical conservation projects in the local setting. He explained how the students’ projects have filled a need for skilled conservation work, and how it is hoped that they will be able to spread their skills on conservation projects throughout the Philippines.
Responding to questions from the floor, the challenge of ensuring the sustainability of the concept was discussed, given the cost of providing the opportunity for students to attend. The linkages between the concept, formal education and the role of government agencies were also discussed. Guests included the Philippine Chargé-d’Affaires and the Cultural Attaché who both appreciated hearing about this program in their country.
This talk completed a lively and provocative series in 2010, and anticipates continued activity in 2011.
Luke James

11. ICOMOS Scientific Symposium 2011 – call for papers
Call for Papers: “Heritage: Driver of Development”
Deadline for abstracts: 31 January 2011
The Scientific Symposium which will accompany the ICOMOS General Assembly taking place from 27 November to 2 December 2011 will explore the theme “Heritage: Driver of Development” as briefly illustrated in the ICOMOS Scientific Symposium 2011 – call for papers. Without claiming to cover the entire field, it is proposed to work according to four sub-themes whose boundaries we can possibly expand if deemed necessary.
The Symposium will be open to the public. The papers, among which 65 presentations of 20 minutes each and around one hundred brief 10 minute interventions during round tables, will form the scientific basis of the Symposium, and will feed into the discussions and resulting recommendations.
ICOMOS members who wish to propose a paper for one of the four sub-themes should submit a concise half-page summary (max. 1500 characters, please indicate the full title of the paper and the chosen sub-theme), in French or English, by email at the latest by 31 January 2011 (18:00, Paris time). Please note that this deadline will be strictly adhered to. The abstracts should be accompanied by a short 5-line curriculum vitae and the author’s full contact details (postal address, phone, fax, email).
Successful proposals will be selected anonymously by the Scientific Committee of the Symposium, which will determine the form in which the paper will be given (full presentation or brief intervention); to which sub-theme it is finally allocated, and will inform the authors by 1 March 2011. Successful authors will be asked to provide a more developed proposal (3 pages or max. 9000 characters) by 1 May 2011.
