5. UNITAR World Heritage Training Workshop – Japan, April 2010

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) organised its eighth training workshop on the management and conservation of World Heritage Sites in Hiroshima, Japan, on 19 to 23 April 2010. ICOMOS is a partner organisation in this series.

In broad terms, the workshop:

  • presented participants with key information about the World Heritage system, especially nominations
  • also presented useful information about general heritage issues and practices
  • outlined the range of links between heritage and peace/conflict at a range of levels
  • introduced conservation monitoring, especially in the context of the Periodic Reporting cycle which is currently underway for the Asia-Pacific region
  • created the opportunity for networking amongst regional participants and resource persons

The workshop benefitted from study tours to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and A-Bomb Dome, and to Miyajima Itsukushima Shinto Shrine – both World Heritage sites.

The workshop was attended by 43 participants, resource persons and observers from 29 countries of the Asia-Pacific region and well beyond. The participants came from a wide range of backgrounds including Government organisations such as Ministries of culture, environment and heritage, from academia and research institutes, and from the private sector and non-governmental organisations. The countries represented ranged from Jordan to Ecuador, and from Fiji to China.

The resource people came from a range of organisations including UNESCO, ICOMOS, IUCN, the Getty Conservation Institute, as well as a number of Japanese universities and institutes.

Duncan Marshall was the representative of ICOMOS at the workshop, and was financially supported by Australia ICOMOS.

14. Conference announcement – ICOMOS France

ICOMOS France is pleased to announce that their 2010 conference will be held in Paris, 4-5 October 2010.

Heritage : a model for sustainable development?
How to improve energy performance in European architectural and urban heritage?

The conference will be jointly organised by ICOMOS France and Euromed Heritage.

This conference will present a comparative view between countries regarding their legal obligations for the preservation of architectural and urban heritage and the energy performance of existing buildings. Today, the sustainable development of historic towns has become a major imperative. The protection and use of architectural and urban heritage makes an essential contribution to this effort.

However, most modern solutions that achieve the required energy savings rely on contemporary construction standards and are not necessarily compatible with the specific architectural and technical characteristics of ancient buildings and vernacular architecture.

Presentations will be given by various European and Mediterranean national ICOMOS committees, ICOMOS France and Euromed Heritage, by representatives of regional and local public authorities as well as heritage experts. These will showcase best practice example, either traditional, forgotten, or innovating, that are emerging across Europe and Mediterranean countries. Discussions and proposals based on case studies will provide theoretical and practical references for upcoming public policy development initiated by member countries and local authorities.
