1. Outback and Beyond – More Than Just a Conference

At Australia ICOMOS conferences we expect presentations, site excursions, food and plenty of chatter.

In Broken Hill you can also expect exhibitions. Broken Hill is a recognised centre for artistic endeavour and this conference will celebrate that.

Firstly, there will be the exhibition associated with the Photography Competition. You have until 22 March to get your entries in and already we have entries from Kashgar, outback QLD, southern NSW and the California gold fields and there are photos in every category.

The categories for the competition will centre on the three major conference themes. These are:

  • Historic towns (individual image)
  • Industrial heritage (individual image)
  • Pastoralism (individual image)
  • Photo Essay (up to six images on any of the three conference themes)

Entry is open to Australia ICOMOS members and conference delegates. Voting in each category will be open to conference delegates and members of the general public.

Competition entries must be submitted by Monday 22 March 2010 at the latest. Further information, including the competition terms and conditions, are in the entry package, which can be downloaded from the conference website http://www.aicomos.com/2010-outback-and-beyond/ (click on “Call for Papers” from the menu).

Secondly, there is the Broken Hill Art Exhibition. Bruce Tindale, Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery Manager is curating an exhibition drawn from the collection of the Broken Hill Gallery. This exhibition will feature images of Broken Hill and its surrounds and provide delegates with an introduction to the artistic offerings of the town and its surrounds.

Finally, we have accepted a generous offer from artist, Suzie Edwards. The title of her exhibition is Please don’t send me home and focuses on the town of Portland a town built around a cement works. ‘The town that built Sydney’ according to the Portland Development Association website, and it… is of interest as an historic mining town and as the place of the first cement works in Australia. This exhibition addresses our Industrial Heritage theme.

So between all the usual offerings of papers and discussions there will be plenty of in-house visual delights and the opportunity to explore the other artistic offerings of Broken Hill, a town well known for its artistic endeavours.

PRE AND POST CONFERENCE TOURS

Whilst our registrations for the conference are strong we are still looking for more participants in the pre- and post-conference tours.

6. National Archives of Australia closures

Australia ICOMOS, like many other concerned organisations, wrote to Senator Ludwig expressing our concern at the proposed Closure of National Archives of Australia Offices in Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart. We emphasised that our members have a clearly established interest in Australian heritage, an important aspect of which is the wealth of historical records that remain in Australia’s archive, and the ability to be able to access these records in an expedient and cost-effective way. In addition – and with equal respect to the public right – we maintained that access to archival material should be as openly available as possible to members of the public, who are ultimately the owners of this extremely valuable resource.

Since that time we note that the Minister has decided not to close these offices at this time and is reviewing the matter. This may not be a permanent reprieve so members are encouraged to monitor this situation and let the secretariat know if they become aware that the situation has changed.

8. Heritage Recording and Information Management in the Digital Age (SMARTdoc) – call for posters

Heritage Recording and Information Management in the Digital Age (SMARTdoc)

19-20 November 2010

University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

Beginning in 2006 Robin Letelier brought his vision of an integrated graduate level course in heritage recording, documentation and information management to the Program in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania. Today that course curriculum, now under the direction of Mario Santana, represents the synthesis of principles and practices considered fundamental knowledge for all heritage professionals. This symposium, initially planned by Robin at UPenn, is dedicated to that vision and his tireless effort to promote heritage conservation through research, teaching, and public service.

Good decisions in heritage conservation are based on timely, relevant and accurate information about the conditions, materials and evolution of heritage buildings and landscapes. Therefore, documenting, recording and analyzing heritage places are an essential part of their conservation and management.

More information about the symposium can be found at http://www.smartdocheritage.org.

Please also refer to the attached Call for Posters.
