NEW The Climate, Heritage and Mental Health Project

The loss, or anticipated loss, of natural and cultural heritage due to climate breakdown is increasingly being recognised as a significant driver of psychological distress. Natural and cultural heritage can include landscapes, ecosystems, and culturally significant things and places, including their intangible meanings and associated memories. This project will determine the mental health impacts of climate related heritage loss, and develop interventions, professional resources, and policy recommendations and mitigate these impacts through community-led change rather than individual medicalised approaches.

Increasing understanding of the relationship between heritage, wellbeing and resilience is so important. Australia ICOMOS is a partner in this work. Congratulations to Toby Freeman, Ania Kotarba-Morley and the entire team on this significant achievement.

Further information about the project can be found here.

Jim Kerr Address & AICOMOS AGM | Canberra – ANU | 4-5.30 pm 20 November 2026

Associate Professor Yujie Zhue, Centre for Heritage and Museum Studies will present this year’s address.

An anthropologist and critical heritage scholar, Yujie’s research explores how heritage, memory, place and identity are produced and transformed across communities and borders.

Address abstract: Heritage in Motion: Rethinking Place, Identity and the Future of Heritage

A central premise of heritage conservation is to understand place: its histories, meanings, associations and cultural significance. At a moment when Australia ICOMOS is reflecting on fifty years of practice and the continuing influence of the Burra Charter, this Address asks a simple question: how can heritage conserve place without fixing culture in place?

The AGM will follow the Jim Kerr Address at 6pm, booking not required for the AGM

Jim Kerr Address Bookings can be made here.

Address: Sir Roland Wilson Theatre, Roland Wilson Building (#120), Theatrette Rm 2.02

Australian National University

120 McCoy Circuit, ANU

Australia ICOMOS@50 birthday celebration in KUCHING, MALAYSIA

The celebration will take the form of drinks followed by a buffet banquet dinner at The Granary, an 1885 warehouse located within the Marian Boutique Lodging House, and rumoured to have stored grains, belian ironwood, and opium – for Kuching’s influential Ong Ewe Hai family dynasty. The dilapidated old warehouse underwent a major adaptive reuse restoration project in 2021 to create KANTIN, an urban hipster cafe serving Sarawakian food with an avant-garde twist.

Dress Code: Plan on dressing with a nod to the year 1976. Think scarves, headbands, beads, Afros and all things Asian!

If you are coming to Kuching, please make sure to book by Sunday 4th October 2026, when we will open up the invitation to our international colleagues, subject to availability.

Book Here.

AICOMOS SUBMISSIONS

NEW Australia ICOMOS recently made a submission to the Productivity Commission on Housing Supply Regulation.

Australia ICOMOS has lodged a submission to the Productivity Commission’s Housing Supply Regulation inquiry, supporting efforts to increase housing supply and affordability while arguing that heritage conservation and housing growth can be advanced together.

A key focus of the submission is the Commission’s proposed Reform Direction 2.5, which would review heritage and neighbourhood character controls that are considered to affect housing development. Australia ICOMOS argues that the interim report does not provide sufficient evidence that statutory heritage protections are a significant constraint on housing supply and that it conflates heritage controls with neighbourhood character provisions, which serve different planning purposes.

Drawing on Australian and international research, the submission presents evidence on the social, cultural, environmental and economic benefits of heritage, including its contribution to community wellbeing, place identity, sustainability and adaptive reuse. It also challenges some of the report’s assumptions about the relationship between heritage protection and housing supply, arguing that the evidence base for proposed heritage reforms remains incomplete.

Rather than reducing heritage protections, Australia ICOMOS proposes a “conserve-and-build” approach that would support adaptive reuse, heritage-compatible infill, gentle density, streamlined approvals for low-impact works, and targeted housing growth on non-contributory and lower-significance sites. The submission argues that housing supply can be increased while retaining the cultural significance, liveability and distinctiveness of Australia’s towns and cities.

Australia ICOMOS has called on the Commission to engage with heritage organisations and experts before finalising recommendations affecting heritage places and to develop a stronger evidence base for any proposed reforms.

You can read the submission here.

NEW Request for Proposals: Development of Indigenous Cultural Landscapes Guidance Document

The Forest Stewardship Council is a global not for profit standard-setting body that promotes environmentally, socially and economically responsible forest management. It is commissioning the development of a new guidance document with an associated case study to support forest managers in implementing important upcoming requirements for Indigenous Cultural Landscapes (ICLs) in the revised FSC Forest Stewardship Standard for Australia. Under the standard, certified forest managers will need to work with First Nations communities in and around their management units to identify ICLs under their management and develop measures to protect these through a Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process with the affected communities.

Proposals to contribute to the development of this standard are invited and can be submitted by 21 October.  Further information is available at this link:  https://anz.fsc.org/newsfeed/request-for-proposals-development-of-indigenous-cultural-landscapes-guidance-document
