Details for memorial service for Dr Laila Haglund
Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend a memorial gathering celebrating the life of Dr Laila Haglund, prominent Australian Archaeologist and the founding president of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists, at the Chau Chak Museum in the University of Sydney on 14 September 2026 at 2pm.
Afternoon tea will be provided for those who attend in person, and we are hoping to organise a Zoom link for those who cannot.

NEW Australian Heritage Council | Sharon Sullivan Award | Nominations now open
The Australian Heritage Council Sharon Sullivan Award recognises an individual’s or group’s outstanding contribution to the conservation and protection of Australia’s national heritage.
This can be through:
- leadership
- administration
- professional practice including education, research and promotion
The award is in recognition of Professor Sharon Sullivan’s enduring impact in cultural heritage in Australia and internationally.
Professor Sullivan has held positions in the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, The Australian Heritage Commission and led the Australian delegation to the World Heritage Committee. Professor Sullivan is also an honorary member of Australia ICOMOS and ICOMOS for her outstanding achievements in the field.
If you know someone whose work deserves recognition, you are encouraged to nominate them.

NEW Four PhD scholarships for the ARC Training Centre | Submissions due 16 August 2026
The ARC Training Centre for Archaeology in the resources sector has four important projects for PhD students to undertake.
The Four PhD projects cover the topics:
- Indigenous rights and cultural heritage in the Australian resources sector
- Archaeology and Cultural heritage management in risk assessment
- Cultural Heritage’s Presence in Decision Making; and
- Indigenous data sovereignty.
This PhD opportunity is offered as part of the ARC’s Industrial Transformation Training Centre Program which brings together researchers and industry partners in a highly collaborative, cohort-based environment. A core aim of the Program is to support the development of a connected community of researchers and industry professionals through shared training, mentoring and engagement activities. To enable this experience, candidates are expected to be physically based at the enrolling university for the duration of their candidature. This requirement reflects the Program’s emphasis on in-person engagement, cohort development, and active participation in shared training, research activities, and industry collaboration.

Inner West Built Environment Awards | Submissions due 26 July 2026
The annual Built Environment Awards is this year inspired by the 2026 Australia Heritage Festival theme, ‘Change’.
For the last 31 years the medal for conservation has been awarded to successful examples of positive heritage outcomes within the Inner West Local Government Area.
Projects completed in the past three years located in the Inner West are eligible and can be residential, commercial or public spaces. The awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the amalgamation of contemporary design and the rich heritage of the Inner West.

NEW Australian Garden History Society | National Conference | Orange NSW | 25-28 September 2026
The conference program draws on Orange’s rich history, much influenced by the rich basalt soils that have allowed First Nations people to live well on this land, and that has seen waves of European horticultural endeavour. Once known for its cherries and apples, Orange is now most famous for its shiraz and chardonnay.
The conference lectures will be held at the Orange Civic Theatre, 135 Byng Street, Orange. Lectures will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings with bus tours in the afternoon.
Even if you can’t get to Orange in September, you can still register for the lecture series, which will be live streamed or available as a recording.
