Australia ICOMOS at 50: Looking back and looking forwards

By Stephanie Johnston

On the first weekend of May 2026, close to 150 Australia ICOMOS members and associates gathered in Burra, South Australia to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Australian arm of ICOMOS at the historic mansion of Illawarra, Melbourne, on 20th October 1976.

It was of course fitting that the town of Burra was chosen to kick off our 50th anniversary celebrations.

A major outcome of the inaugural Australia ICOMOS conference held in Beechworth in April 1978 was the commitment to work towards a common terminology and philosophy for conservation practice in Australia which culminated in a highly consequential meeting at Burra’s Kooringa Hotel, where the Australia ICOMOS Charter for the Conservation of Places of Cultural Significance (aka the ‘Burra Charter’) were drafted and adopted on the 19 August 1979.

Celebrations began with an Adelaide Town Hall reception hosted by Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Dr. Jane Lomax-Smith AM on the Thursday afternoon. A welcome to Ngadjuri Country on the banks of Burra Creek on the Friday evening was followed by welcome drinks in the adjacent historic Paxton Square hosted by Goyder Regional Council. A full day symposium in Burra Town Hall on the Saturday followed the theme of Looking back and Looking Forwards, with contributions from a range of familiar and not-so-familiar speakers.

The Burra community came to the party with exceptional country catering on all levels – from their famous savoury and sweet ‘Tiddyoggy’ Cornish pasties to the feast of perfectly cooked roast lamb and chicken topped off with a giant birthday cake served at the formal anniversary dinner at Burra’s Redruth Gaol on the Saturday night.

Two busy days of site visits to the Burra and Moonta mines, a special Dry Stone Walls tour put on by the Dry Stone Walls Association Australia and a memorable tour of the Sevenhill Jesuit cultural landscape topped off a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

If you missed these initial celebrations, there will be plenty of further opportunities throughout the year to mark this important milestone.

Look out also for a special birthday issue of Historic Environment coming soon ….

Everyday Heritage: Conviviality, Creativity, Care

15 August 2026
National Film & Sound Archive

This symposium celebrates how heritage is lived, loved and created through everyday life in the ACT region by exploring the themes of conviviality, creativity and care.

Conviviality: how do food and drink and community feasts and celebrations connect people, transmit culture and shape everyday heritage?

Creativity: from design to craft traditions, to contemporary art interventions that reimagine heritage for new audiences, what place does creativity play in shaping our experience of everyday heritage?

Care: how do caring relationships shape everyday heritage? This theme includes family and community histories, visitor interpretation, intergenerational knowledge, and the work of caring, for places, objects, and traditions.

We welcome submissions for 10 or 20 minute papers that relate to these themes. Submissions might address intangible and tangible cultural heritage, food heritage, contested heritage, and creative approaches to interpretation and conservation. Submissions might explore local, national, or international contexts, but should reflect on how they relate to everyday heritage in the ACT region. Please include:

NEW Engineering Heritage Awards and Conference 2026

Applications are now open for both the John Monash Medal and the Colin Crisp Award.

The John Monash Medal recognises outstanding contributions by individuals, groups or organisations to the conservation, interpretation, promotion and understanding of Australia’s engineering heritage. It is particularly relevant to those who have made a significant contribution to heritage advocacy, conservation practice, public education, research, or the recognition of engineering heritage places and achievements.

The Colin Crisp Award recognises excellence in the documentation and conservation of engineering heritage. It is commonly associated with high-quality reports, studies, publications, conservation management work, research, interpretation material, or project documentation that contributes to the long-term understanding and preservation of engineering heritage.

These awards may be of particular interest to Australia ICOMOS members involved in heritage conservation, conservation management planning, adaptive reuse, industrial heritage, infrastructure heritage, interpretation, research, documentation and interdisciplinary project work involving architects, engineers, historians, archaeologists, planners and heritage consultants.

In addition, members are invited to consider submitting an abstract for the Heritage Engineering Conference. Contributions from ICOMOS members and allied heritage professionals would be warmly welcomed, particularly where projects involve conservation practice, heritage values assessment, adaptive reuse, investigation, documentation, interpretation, materials conservation, structural conservation, or collaboration between heritage consultants, architects, engineers and asset owners.
