WORKSHOPS / COURSES / EVENTS / EXHIBITIONS

NEW Museums of History NSW | Firestick | The Mint NSW | 16 April 2026

Firestick is a new six-part talk series featuring First Nations visionaries who are blazing a trail and lighting the way for future generations in diverse industries, from video game design to global fashion.

Taking place in the lead-up to Anzac Day, the first talk draws on the historically overlooked experiences of Indigenous servicemen in the 20th century. Speakers include Ngunnawal/Gomeroi man Michael Bell, Indigenous Liaison Officer at the Australian War Memorial, and Yuwaalaraay filmmaker Dylan Nicholls.

This talk will also feature an exclusive screening of Nicholls’s award-winning 2025 documentary Bringing his spirit home, a moving portrait of Gomeroi man Peter Milliken as he travels to France to visit his uncle’s war grave and return soil to Country.

The format of the series encourages informal post-talk gatherings between the speakers and audience, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and deeper understanding of Indigenous innovation and agency. Continue the conversation in the Mint courtyard over food and drinks.

NEW Australian Gardens of History Society NSW Branch | Chinese Garden of Friendship Visit | 14 March 2026

Enjoy a tour of the Chinese Garden of Friendship with expert guides, landscape architect and urban designer, Oi Choong and heritage specialist, Julian Siu. They prepared the conservation management plan for the garden, which preceded its listing on the NSW heritage register.

This plan is guiding changes, like the 2025 Meandering Pathway of Tranquility. It complements a 2012 major horticultural maintenance plan, 2004 landscape maintenance plan, Feng Shui analysis and advice from 1988 – 2004 from Guangzhou Garden Planning & Building Design Institute, in many visits. Gardens evolve!

Designed in China by Guangdong Landscape Bureau, it was built, planted, and opened in 1988 as a joint government project, part of celebrating Australia’s Bicentenary. It represents the culmination of aspirations of Australian-Chinese communities and years of organising. It celebrates the longevity and contribution of Australian-Chinese people to NSW and the sister state relationship of NSW and Guangdong province. It is one of few traditional public Chinese gardens created outside mainland China.

The garden was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2018 as exemplar of a community-based late 20th century overseas Chinese garden (as found in Australasia, North America, and Europe). As NSW’s first ling-nam (Southern or Cantonese style) garden developed cooperatively between Sydney’s Chinese communities, NSW & Chinese public authorities. And as a symbol of the welcoming of Australian-Chinese communities into NSW & Australian society.

Tickets available here.

CyArk | Virtual Museum of Ukrainian History

This free exhibition published on CyArk’s Tapestry platform features five galleries and 25 high-resolution 3D models, paired with insights from Ukrainian archaeologists and experts to illuminate the rich, multilayered histories that have shaped Ukraine’s identity across eras and cultures.

The launch marks the culmination of three years of training and capacity-building with Ukrainian institutions, implemented in collaboration with the Ukrainian NGO Archaïc, and reflects the hard work and dedication of our Ukrainian partners. CyArk staff convened participants from across Ukraine in Poland to deliver digital documentation equipment and hands-on training. Those same teams returned home to document hundreds of artifacts and heritage sites, strengthening local capacity to safeguard cultural heritage as part of Ukraine’s recovery. These efforts were made possible with support from Iron Mountain, the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, and Jagiellonian University. To learn more about the project, check out the blog or press release.
