NEW GA2023 WINS National Trust (NSW) Heritage Award – Events & Exhibitions Category
 Australia ICOMOS is honoured and delighted that GA2023 – the 21st global General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of ICOMOS – won the ‘Events and Exhibitions’ category at this year’s National Trust of Australia (NSW) Heritage Awards, alongside the Museums of History NSW exhibition: ‘Sydney Opera House at 50’.
Accepting the award for Australia ICOMOS, ICOMOS and Arinex, GA2023 Convenor Prof Richard Mackay and Organising Committee Chair Helen Lardner noted that it was no co-incidence that many GA2023 supporters also won heritage awards for a wide array of wonderful projects.
Australia ICOMOS congratulates all of the winners, and those who were commended or shortlisted.

National Reconciliation Week – Now More Than Ever 27 May – 3 June 2024
The NRW 2024 theme is a reminder to us all that Now More Than Ever we need connection, we need change, and we need reconciliation.
Get involved in various events around the country, below are just some of the events happening:
Voices for Reconciliation
Reconciliation Australia is calling singers across the country to come together in song to contribute to National Reconciliation Week 2024, from Monday 27 May – Monday 3 June.
The song we will all be singing is the great reconciliation anthem Blackfella/Whitefella by the Warumpi Band.
Add your voices for reconciliation. Louder than ever.
- Register your choir or group to participate using the registration form.
- When you register your choir, you will be able to access arrangements and backing tracks. There are full and shortened arrangements of the song. As well as filming tips if you wanted to share your performance video with us.
- Rehearse and work on your approach to the song – sing as much or as little of the song as you want.
- Choose where you would like to perform your song – e.g., at school lunchtime, at a party or event, in a park, at the local markets, in a hospital or care facility, or even in your own lounge room.
- You can choose to video your choir or group singing and share via social media during National Reconciliation Week using the tags #NRW2024Voices #VoicesforReconciliation.

Two Ways – The Kimberly Rock Art Legacy Film Screening – Presented by Rock Art Australia 29 May 2024
Set in the rock art galleries of the Kimberley, ‘Two Ways’ highlights the collaboration between modern scientists and one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures, the Balanggarra people, guided by Elder Augustine “Boornoornoor” Unangho.
This documentary showcases a blend of science and traditional wisdom, revealing the enduring narratives of art, climate change, and human resilience spanning over 60,000 years.

UTS Seminar: Tokenist, Ally or Accomplice? Dr summer May Finlay 11.30-1.00 27 May 2024
2024 is a year when many non-Indigenous Australians are reflecting on their engagement with First Nations people and issues. Performative action, tokenism and good intentions are not enough. How can we step up, lean into discomfort and do better?
Join us during Reconciliation Week to explore the differences between a tokenist, ally and accomplice and hear practical tips on meaningfully engaging with First Nations issues and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereignty and self-determination.
Dr Summer May Finlay will provide a keynote address on how non-Indigenous people can stand and act with First Nations people, and a panel discussion with Prof. Lindon Coombes, Prof. Chris Cunneen and Dr Elaine Laforteza, moderated by Prof. Robynne Quiggin, will reveal further insights into how you can be actively involved.

Victorian Goldfields World Heritage Bid update
The Victorian Goldfields was created by one of the world’s most significant goldrush events. In 2022 Regional Development Victoria provided $500,000 to the Victorian Goldfields Tourism Executive and the local government partnership, which matched funds of over $125,000 to deliver a draft Tentative Listing submission and a Sustainable Tourism Master Plan. The Victorian Government granted $2 million to Heritage Victoria to progress World Heritage Listing over three years from 1 July 2023 and is seeking to include the Victorian Goldfields in Australia’s World Heritage Tentative List by 1 February 2025.

Cultural Heritage Agency ‘Sharing Stories on Contested Histories’ International exchange program Applications close 29 July 2024
How are museum and heritage professionals around the world responding to current societal challenges, such as the climate crisis and social inequalities in and through their work? How do museums critically engage with their own histories and reflect on their role in society in the face of these challenges? How can they handle historic objects created and collected during colonial times in more caring and ethical ways? How do they navigate and react to contestations over certain histories and heritage? This exchange programme brings together a group of young professionals from around the world to reflect on these questions and to exchange knowledge and experiences regarding their working practices.
This programme is conceptualised for young museum and heritage professionals, researchers and independent practitioners based in or from one of the following countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, India, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia*, Spain, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Ukraine, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, South Africa and South Korea.
The online sessions will take place between 12:00 and 14:00 CET on Thursdays and Fridays, online: 16 September to 1 November 2024 and concludes with offline sessions in The Netherlands from 9 to 17 November.

A Special Collection in the transdisciplinary journal, Global Perspectives, exploring the development of the term ‘heritage’ and its applications today and in the future.
We invite submissions from various perspectives (including non-academic), methodologies,
disciplines, and geographical contexts. Papers may explore (but are not limited to):
● Case studies that evidence how the boundaries of how we define heritage have been pushed
● How an understanding of heritage is produced at the intersections of other disciplines
● Explorations of the development of our understanding of heritage from past to future
● How things become or cease to be understood as heritage

ICOMOS Culture-Nature Prize | Applications close 31 May 2024
International ICOMOS is launching the 2nd edition of the ICOMOS Culture-Nature Prize, which will be awarded to support the most promising Culture-Nature initiatives undertaken by ICOMOS members. The 2024 edition is funded by funded by Giving Tuesday donations received in 2022.
Culture-Nature initiatives recognise the interconnections between cultural and natural heritage and rethink how we can protect culture and nature through a comprehensive approach with local communities. Through integrated protection, management and sustainable development of our heritage places, Culture-Nature initiatives build resilience to today’s challenges of climate change, pollution and rapid urbanisation.
The prize will be given to a project under implementation, which addresses connections between culture and nature and makes a significant contribution to the heritage field in an innovative and effective way.

2024 Inner West Built Environment Awards (Marrickville Medal) submissions close 30 June 2024
The conservation award, which has been awarded annually since 1995, is open to all building works within the Inner West local government area, large or small, public or private, completed in the past three years and having positive conservation outcomes. We encourage you to submit an entry in the awards that you think warrants recognition and to share this event with your colleagues. It is an opportunity to celebrate the unique and rich built environment of the Inner West and come together with colleagues to share ideas and stories.
This year’s theme is ‘Connections’ in line with the National Trust Heritage Festival theme.

Heritage consultant Flavia Scardamaglia gives a re-introduction to Leslie Wilkinson, best-known as the first Professor of Architecture at the University of Sydney. A leading and influential figure in Australian architecture, whose innovative approach combined our colonial heritage with Mediterranean influences he had experienced on his travels. She will discuss his ideas and role as a garden-maker and designer.
A 2022 Heritage Study Flavia prepared for Woollahra Municipal Council focused on his extensive output of new houses, flats and gardens, alterations and extensions to existing ones, from 1922 and 1973. And his many university buildings and courtyards, churches, memorials and other design work. His home, ‘Greenway’ at Vaucluse, AGHS Sydney has had the joy of visiting before. Learn more about this man, a love for Mediterranean architecture and gardens, and influence across Woollahra, and in Sydney.

Melbourne Design Week The Fine Art of Traditional Trades presented by HCV & National Trust Vic, 27 May 2024
The grand Parisian cathedral of Notre Dame is rising from the ashes. Eight-hundred year-old woodwork practices are being revived to help in the rebuild. Closer to home, many of our heritage buildings also require traditional materials and techniques to survive. This panel discussion held at iconic Como House will explore the art and value of the traditional skills and trades required to care for and maintain our heritage buildings, as well as their relevance to new construction. The panel will also look at how we ensure this knowledge and skills are being transferred to a new generation of tradespeople and design professionals.

University of Canberra & Engineers Australia Professional development course: Implementation of Heritage Engineering Solutions | 1 June-31 July 2024
This course will introduce engineers and other professionals to heritage materials and construction methods, including the ways in which heritage materials deteriorate, and processes for conserving them.
Implementation of Heritage Engineering Solutions is a professional development course co-designed by Engineering Heritage Australia and the University of Canberra. Cockatoo Island (Sydney) is the site for a 2-day workshop looking at heritage materials and construction methods, modes of deterioration and approaches to conservation. Drawing on Cockatoo Island’s World Heritage convict site through to its mid-twentieth-century industrial heritage the course includes sessions relevant to both structural and mechanical engineers. Backed up by self-paced online learning this course will introduce you to the challenges and possibilities of preserving engineering heritage, and the professional opportunities for specialists working in this area.

Backyard Archaeology Exhibition Canberra Museum & Gallery 16 March – 1 September 2024
The exhibition presents thousands of objects that Steve Brown collected from around an ordinary suburban house and garden in the suburb of Arncliffe, Sydney. Some of the objects were collected during house renovations, others while gardening, and many from archaeological digs. The exhibition shows how a person can become deeply connected to found objects and how everyday encounters with lost and forgotten things can create a ‘sense of place’.
The exhibition includes an original artwork – 35mm sieve – by artist and archaeologist UK Frederick.
Backyard Archaeology is presented in partnership with the ARC-funded Everyday Heritage Project, the University of Canberra, Canberra Museum + Gallery, and GML Heritage.

Millers Point Songbook Garrison Church Millers Point 24-28 May 2024
A musical event celebrating the history of Millers Point and its colourful characters, from Patyegarang to the last social housing tenants of the Sirius building.

Save the Date – 2024 Everyday Heritage Symposium Western Australia 28 November 2024
This one-day symposium will explore ‘everyday heritage and difficult legacies’, starting with the work of international keynote speakers – Prof. Laura McAtackney (University College Cork, Ireland) and Dr Timo Ylimaunu (University of Oulu, Finland) and drawing in diverse perspectives from Western Australia and all around the nation. Experts in the World Heritage Regime: Between Protection and Prestige by Dr Luke James (Lecturer, Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies, Deakin University)
Addressing the topic of expertise in international cultural conservation, this book argues that the UNESCO World Heritage regime emerged as a Faustian pact between protection and prestige, and a productive tension between these elements remains at its core, embodied by the heritage expert. Tracing experts’ practices in the World Heritage regime, this book shows how they burnish, broker and themselves benefit from World Heritage prestige. As World Heritage prestige also contributes to states’ international status claims, the stakes are raised, with both the denouement of the pact and the future for World Heritage poised between condemnation and redemption.

Heritage Council of Victoria report Valuing Victoria’s Heritage has been released
In 2023 the Heritage Council engaged Extent Heritage and Kate Clark to synthesise information on the value of heritage. The report synthesises research on the economic, social and environmental value of heritage. It uses information from both overseas and in Australia. The result is a large document with over 200 cited sources in relation to the value of heritage.

- Meeting the requirements to be a Heritage Advisor under Section 189(1) of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and The Minister’s Guidelines on Appropriate qualifications for Heritage Advisors is essential.

Seeking Expert Examiners | Australia Government – Office for the Arts National Cultural Heritage Committee
We are seeking to expand the list of Expert Examiners registered under the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 (the Act).
We are contacting you on behalf of the National Cultural Heritage Committee (the Committee) to invite you to consider registering. Examiners play an integral role in the operation of the Act, working to ensure that significant Australian cultural heritage objects are retained for the benefit of the nation.
Examiners prepare significance assessments of objects proposed for export or for funding under the National Cultural Heritage Account, in order to establish if material meets the criteria of the National Cultural Heritage Control List and to inform the Committee.
The Committee considers applications along with significance assessments and makes a recommendation to the Minister for the Arts.
The Minister, or their delegate, will then make the final decision.
Why we are inviting you:
- Examiners are recognised experts in a particular field, and are appointed on the basis of their employment, professional qualifications and expertise in their chosen field.
- Examiners can be registered as individuals with expertise (independent EEs), individuals representing institutions, or as institutions.
Remuneration:
- An honorarium of $350 (GST exclusive) is payable per Significance Assessment completed.
- This is an ex gratia payment given in recognition of professional services rendered, and is not intended to reflect a professional fee.
- Examiners who are registered as an employee of a Commonwealth institution do not receive an honorarium as these duties are considered to form part of their employment.

The Director, Artlab Australia is based at Artlab’s well-equipped, centralised conservation laboratories located in the heart of Adelaide’s cultural precinct.
Role Purpose
The Director, Artlab Australia is accountable to the Deputy Chief Executive, Community, Culture and Place at DPC and leads a team of 35 specialist conservators and support staff who provide strategic advice and deliver services for the conservation, preservation and accessibility of cultural collection assets.
These services include policy advice on the preservation of the state collections, strategic planning, preventive programs, remedial treatments, exhibition preparation, conservation research, community support and education. Artlab delivers its services to government cultural institutions, other organisations and the public. It operates as a government business enterprise.
A recognised tertiary qualification in materials conservation or equivalent is essential for this role.

You will also have at least 5+ years of cultural heritage planning experience and hold a graduate degree of a relevant cultural heritage or planning practice (cultural heritage management, anthropology, archaeology, architecture with specialisation in heritage conservation, planning with specialisation in heritage, or equivalent).

We have an excellent opportunity for a mid-level Built Heritage Consultant in our Sydney office.
As a key member of our team, you will have the chance to contribute your expertise to a variety of exciting projects. Your primary focus will be working under the guidance of the Principal (Built Heritage), where you’ll be responsible for conducting background research, assisting with site inspections, writing technical consulting reports, and providing advice to clients.
Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with clients, participate in community consultations, and collaborate with internal teams to deliver comprehensive solutions.
To excel in this role previous consulting experience is essential, and field experience will be highly regarded. Your ability to adapt to diverse projects and locations will be crucial as you will work on multiple assignments with varying demands. Flexibility and a willingness to travel are essential attributes to ensure success in this position.
A valid driver’s license and Australian work rights are required for this role.
