Call for Expressions of Interest in Hosting a Future Australia ICOMOS National Conference

In the wake of the success of the Sydney GA2023 and associated Scientific Symposium, Australia ICOMOS is planning ahead for future national conferences. Expressions of Interest are now invited from members who are interested in hosting an Australia ICOMOS annual conference in the next 5 year period (2025-2028). Australia ICOMOS conferences have often been in partnership with aligned organisations, and typically offer the opportunity for members to meet, network and share their knowledge and experience. Conferences are also an important way AI attracts new members and encourages dialogue on strategic issues.

A committee has recently been formed to develop a proposal for a national symposium to be held in Perth, WA in October 2024 on the theme of Caring for a Sunburnt Country.

Previous ICOMOS conference themes can be found at this link on the AICOMOS website https://australia.icomos.org/events/conference/. Should you be interested in exploring this opportunity further please email an initial EOI outlining possible themes, dates, locations, partners, funding and sponsors to EC conference coordinator Stephanie Johnston on stephaniejohnston2@icloud.com or austicomos@deakin.edu.au by Friday March 15 2024.

National Scientific Committee for Energy and Sustainability (NSCES) Call for Expressions of Interest for Membership: deadline Monday 19 February 2024

Expressions of interest are invited for those with an interest in and/or experience in energy, sustainability and climate change in heritage to join NSCES, the Australia ICOMOS – National Scientific Committee for Energy and Sustainability. We encourage early career ICOMOS members to apply.

Membership is available as either a member or affiliate. A member of the NSCES will be a member of Australia ICOMOS (or a member of an institution that is a member of AI). An affiliate is a person who is not a member of AI, but who can contribute to the work of the NSCES by bringing particular knowledge, expertise or experience to the committee.

We have regular meetings in Sydney, often with guest speakers, with members in other areas joining through on-line meeting platforms. Members are expected to contribute to the work of the NSCES and to each fulfil a role within the committee. Minutes preparation is shared between committee members. If members fail to attend a meeting or participate in the work of the committee over the period of a year, membership of the committee will lapse.

NSCES is an active committee which works towards building understanding of the link between heritage and sustainability, contributing to the body of knowledge on energy efficiency, sustainability and heritage, advocating for heritage as a sustainable resource and responding to advocacy issues as they arise. Our recent activities have included organizing walking tours of Sustainable Heritage for 70 participants for GA2023 in Sydney. NSCES has also prepared an Australia ICOMOS Practice Note on Heritage and Sustainability. We also, where possible, contribute to the work of ISCES (ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Energy and Sustainability) and CAWG (ICOMOS Climate Action Working Group).

For more information please refer to the aims and objectives of the Committee and the NSCES blog on the Australia ICOMOS website.

Please submit your application form with a short Curriculum Vitae by email to NSCES Convenors, Helen Wilson and Rachel Jackson by Monday 19 February. For any enquiries please also contact Helen or Rachel.

Games for Collections an Introductory Guide | PhD Research Survey

Members may wish to contribute to this research:

My name is Sophia and I am reaching out as a PhD researcher with the University of South Australia, who is interested in gathering the perspectives of professionals within the Australian collections sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) on educational games.

My work revolves around creating an introductory ‘how-to’ guide for educational game development for and by Australian collections institutions, with a strong industry-facing focus. This guide will incorporate considerations of time, technical ability, and cost, and seeks to promote the development of more games for learning within the Australian sector.

I am currently recruiting participants for a study into professional perspectives on games and their use as educational tools in collections, as well as gathering input on what would be useful to include into said ‘introductory’ guide.

If you have 5 minutes to spare, and work or volunteer in any capacity at an Australian collection (including in research), please consider contributing your perspectives to this work through the following survey:

https://unisasurveys.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3PmQG3LZ81rX1NI

If you would like to know more about my research or how your collection could be involved, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me through my project website or LinkedIn

If you have specific experience making a game for a museum (it doesn’t have to be educational!) and have time for a short interview, you could also consider contributing to Nellie Seale’s research at the University of Melbourne.
