NEW GA2023: Exciting Additions to the GA2023 Program!

We are delighted to announce a range of exciting additions to the GA2023 Side Events Program.

Among other new events, special breakfast visits to Hyde Park Barracks – a component of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property – will now be part of the program. Emerging Professionals can enjoy welcome drinks at a Sydney pub created by adapting and historic pumphouse. The Sydney Opera House will host a seminar about Twentieth Century Heritage: Sustainable Development and Climate Action, and First National Cultural experiences will be offered at Sydney’s Botanic Gardens.

Registered GA2023 delegates will receive a dedicated link to add the new side events to their existing registration.

NEW GA2023: Murujuga Cultural Landscape Seminar at ICOMOS GA2023 | 1 September 2023

An international symposium about the Murujuga Cultural Landscape will be held on Friday 1 September at the International Convention Centre, Sydney. The symposium will focus on the journey taken by custodians during the nomination of the Murujuga Cultural Landscape to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The four symposium sessions will address the GA2023 themes of ‘Resilience – Responsibility – Rights – Relationships’. The symposium will consider community aspirations; the recognition of cultural authority and responsibilities in cultural landscape management; scientific values; tourism targets and national economic benefits, and will bring together Indigenous custodians, researchers and heritage managers. Registration is available to all GA2023 attendees as part of the online registration process.

ICOMOS GA2023 Video Series: Sydney Opera House

GA2023 Opal Patron, the Art of Multimedia, is producing a series of short videos to showcase inspiring Australian cultural heritage properties which delegates may visit.

In the third video of this series, we welcome Louise Herron, Chief Executive Officer of the stunning Sydney Opera House who explains why you should visit this iconic world heritage place.

The GA2023 video series will offer a taste of some special Australian cultural places as their leaders share their delight in welcoming you to their World Heritage property to meet the team, exchange ideas, to see and learn what makes them unique.

GA2023 Scientific Symposium – acceptance of abstracts

The GA2023 Preliminary Scientific Symposium Schedule is now available on the GA2023 website here.

Two emails have been sent to the email address of the lead author (not co-authors) of each abstract registered through eOrganiser, the platform used to submit your GA2023 abstract. If you have not received your notifications (they may be in a Junk or Spam folder), then you can check the status of your abstract.

Log into the abstract portal using your username and password.
Click on the ‘Submissions’ tab at the top of the page.
Your submitted abstract/s will then be visible with the status and accepted presentation type.

In order that your abstract appears in the Final Scientific Symposium Schedule, the lead author and co-author/s must register for GA2023 by 31 May.

GA2023: Call for Presentations – Intangible Cultural Heritage Colloquium | Closes 17 April 2023

ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICICH) and the Australia ICOMOS National Scientific Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (NSC-ICH) invite abstracts for our joint colloquium on the theme Expressing Diversity: Intangible Cultural Heritage in Urban Public Spaces to be held on Saturday 2 September, 8:30am – 12:30pm as part of the 2023 ICOMOS General Assembly in Sydney. This will be a free event, open to delegates to the General Assembly and the wider heritage community.

The Colloquium will comprise up to 6 short presentations (15 minutes maximum) plus questions and discussions.

The theme: Expressing Diversity: Intangible Cultural Heritage in Urban Public Spaces recognises that urban public spaces may be both shared and contested, typically having many diverse audiences. As cities become more densely population the potential for conflict may increase, with marginalised groups losing out. How can our ICH practice support inclusion and co-existence? What are the risks and the opportunities, and what techniques or tools does our ICH practice offer to urban planners, heritage professionals and communities? Case studies of particular places that highlight broader questions and issues are encouraged.

Abstracts for the Colloquium need to be submitted to the organising group by Friday 31 March 2023. Your abstract should be no more than 200 words and include your name, affiliation, contact details and the form of your proposed presentation (talk, powerpoint, video). Presentations at the Colloquium will be in English as we will not have any facilities for concurrent interpretation. Visual presentations are strongly encouraged. All presentations will be delivered in person: zoom options are not available. Presentations will be recorded and be available following the colloquium via the NSC-ICH website: https://intangibleculturalheritagensc.wordpress.com/.

EOI: Emerging Heritage Professional (Writer), Internship/Professional development opportunity | International Conservation Services | Applications close 1 May 2023

International Conservation Services, Australia’s largest private conservation practice, is a Corporate Patron of the 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of ICOMOS (GA2023) to be held in Sydney on 31 August – 9 September 2023. As part of our commitment to the important role the cultural heritage sector can play in the sustainability of our planet, ICS is proud to be a Climate Action Patron.

In conjunction with our support of GA2023, we are seeking an Emerging Heritage Professional (Writer) to engage with delegates to create short social media stories both before and during the event. The role would suit a student or recent graduate of heritage studies who is available to commence in May/June 2023.

This is a great opportunity to engage with heritage professionals from around the world on the latest issues, research, information sharing, training and capacity-building through papers, seminars, workshops and site visits. GA2023 and the Scientific Symposium will provide a significant platform for peer-to-peer exchanges, instigation of mentoring relationships and the showcasing of best practice methods.

Remuneration

This 3 month position can be undertaken as an internship or an unpaid professional development opportunity. Concurrent part-time paid social media work for ICS is also available in the 3 months leading up to GA2023. You will receive one registration for the GA2023 Youth Forum and the GA2023. In addition, ICS will cover any pre-approved project-related expenses, eg. travel within Sydney for project purposes.

GA2023 Side Event | Caring for Country Workshop: Indigenous Voices on Culture, Heritage and the Climate Crisis | 2 September 2023, 8:30am-5pm

Caring for Country Workshop: Indigenous Voices on Culture, Heritage and the Climate Crisis.

This day-long workshop highlights Indigenous peoples on the frontline of a climate crisis they did not create, which threatens cultural identity and magnifies longstanding issues of territory and appropriation. The workshop will give Indigenous participants a voice, to inform National, regional and international policy and action, and focus attention on cultural impacts and lack of effective action in response to climate change.

Indicative Program/Itinerary

In the morning we will hear presentations by our two keynote speakers, Maina Talia, Tuvalu, advocate for the people of Tuvalu in the international arena and climate activist speaking on topics such as climate change, oceans, sea-level rise, seabed mining, migration, and traditional knowledge, and Jason Wilson, an Aboriginal man (Murri) and Chair of the Narran Lakes Joint Management Committee with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment tackling Climate Change Adaptation. The afternoon program will feature panellists discussing key points on climate change and impacts on Indigenous heritage and country. This will be followed by a breakout session with all participants discussing in groups. Following reporting on findings from the Breakout session, we will fine-tune a resolution to go to GA2023 and a possible statement to governments.

GA2023 Scientific Symposium: Preliminary Scientific Symposium Schedule now available

The Preliminary Scientific Symposium Schedule is now available on the GA2023 website. The Schedule includes: Murujuga Cultural Landscape Symposium (Friday 1 Sept.), Urban Heritage, Placemaking, and Sustainability Seminar (Sunday 3 Sept.), Keynote Speakers Dr June Oscar AO (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner) and HRH Princess Dana Firas (UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador) (Monday 4 Sept.), International Symposium on the overarching theme of ‘Heritage Changes’ extending across 4 Themes and 5 Programs and 88-sessions (Monday 4 – Thursday 7 Sept.), Greater Blue Mountains Field Trip (Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 Sept.), and an international panel on ‘The Future of the World Heritage Convention’ (Friday 8 Sept.).

The authors of session, paper, and poster abstracts selected in the Preliminary Scientific Symposium Schedule have until 31 May 2023 to register for GA2023. After this date a final version of the Scientific Symposium Schedule will be developed.

GA2023 is a global heritage event – of which the Scientific Symposium is one significant part. Please join delegates from around Australia and the world at the 21st Triennial General Assembly of ICOMOS in Sydney (31 August – 9 September). Australia ICOMOS new membership category: Associate Institutional Membership

Australia ICOMOS has introduced a new membership category, known as Associate Institutional Membership. This new category aims to encourage diverse participation in Australia ICOMOS.

Fees for the new membership category are minimal and Associate Institutional Members will receive many Member Benefits including discounts at some Australia ICOMOS functions and conferences (for three full attendees) as well as discounts on Australia ICOMOS publications and a subscription to the Australia ICOMOS refereed journal Historic Environment.

The Associate Institutional Membership category is open to Indigenous Corporations registered with ORIC, charities, community groups and other organisations which can be approved at the discretion of the Executive Committee. It is open to organisations that accept the ICOMOS Ethical Principles and devote a substantial part of their activities to the conservation, protection, restoration, rehabilitation, enhancement or interpretation of cultural heritage. NEW New members sought for the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Council | Closed 30 April 2023

The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs has announced the opportunity for four new members to join the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Council.

The Council is the State’s peak strategic body on Aboriginal cultural heritage matters and provides advice to the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. The Council is a key component of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021 (Act) which provides a modern framework for the recognition, protection, conservation and preservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage while recognising the fundamental importance of Aboriginal cultural heritage to Aboriginal people.

To be eligible for membership, nominees must have knowledge about Aboriginal cultural heritage or have experience in matters relating to Aboriginal cultural heritage. Consideration of knowledge, skills, experience or qualifications in the following disciplines can also be taken into account:

anthropology
archaeology
engineering
ethnography
governance
history
land management
law
natural resource management
urban and regional planning

The inaugural Council was created in September 2022 and comprises a mixture of members experienced in Aboriginal cultural heritage, environment, planning, law and Government and led by male and female Aboriginal Co-Chairs, Irene Stainton and Dr Mark Bin Bakar. The other Council members are Merle Carter, Kevin Walley, Graham Castledine, Dr Debbie Fletcher, and Belinda Moharich.

The journal Change Over Time: An International Journal of Conservation and the Built Environment, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press, invites submissions for: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage, Guest Editors: Gail Dubrow and Kecia Fong

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have been integral to the growth, expansion, and cultural vibrancy of the United States for more than 150 years, and yet their contributions remain largely invisible in the cultural landscapes and built environments of US national heritage. Laborers, innovators, artists, businesspeople, politicians, community leaders, educators, neighbours, and friends, their struggles and accomplishments reflect the enduring contradictions of US policy and society regarding who is an American. Despite their civic commitments and sacrifices, they have long been perceived as perpetual foreigners. This historical bias skews the narrative of the US and obscures its global legacy of colonialism. How do you make a case for preserving a history that, through exclusion, is nearly universally absent? Acknowledging places, sites, and events of AAPI heritage in the built environment is a cultural justice issue and a method of societal repair.

This issue of Change Over Time on “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage” invites insights from scholarship, professional practice, advocacy, and lived experience to stimulate a more robust public conversation about the future of conserving AAPI heritage in the built environment. We welcome contributions that ask hard questions and point in fresh directions with a goal of accelerating cultural justice. To that end, we seek to include a broad spectrum of AAPI heritage, from sites of celebration and joy to sites of resistance in the struggle for equal rights.

Abstracts of 200-300 words are due 30 April 2023. Notifications and invitations for manuscript development will be sent by late May 2023. Final manuscript submissions will be due November 2023.

Government House, Canberra – Heritage Values Review – Invitation to Complete Survey | Closes 11 April 2023

GML Heritage has been engaged by the Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General to update the heritage values of Government House, Yarralumla in Canberra.

ICOMOS members’ views, experiences and insights will help us to understand more about Government House and its heritage values. We are interested in learning about your experience with and perception of Government House, Canberra and invite you to complete this short, anonymous survey, available at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GovernmentHouseHeritageSurvey

The survey is not seeking views on the Governor-General, the Office of the Governor-General or the role the Governor-General plays in contemporary Australia. AGM AACAI WA Safety and Mental Health – Short Survey

At the 2022 AGM AACAI WA established the inaugural Safety and Mental Health Committee. The committee was established with the aim of raising awareness for members and heritage professionals in the industry in relation to key safety hazards in archaeology and provide members with the tools, training and guidance on select topics.

This short five question survey has been designed to identify key topics and safety issues of concern to members. We appreciate your time and feedback as the collected information will help the AACAI WA Safety Committee focus on key topics that are a concern for AACAI members and for archaeologists in general in Australia.

Community Heritage Grants 2023 Round – Now Open | New applicants closes 8 May 2023

The Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program supports community-based organisations to identify and care for Australian cultural heritage collections which are publicly accessible, locally held and nationally significant.

The CHG supports small, local groups with limited funding and staffing resources, who would benefit from access to professional cultural heritage expertise. Grants of up to $20,000 are available to help organisations undertake a three-stage journey to document their collection, identify collection care recommendations and implement practical improvements and enhancements. Non-profit, incorporated organisations – including historical societies, archives, regional museums, public libraries, community groups, multicultural and Indigenous organisations – are encouraged to apply. In the first two stages, organisations work with experienced heritage practitioners to produce reports that;

Explain the meanings and value of their collections (a significance assessment)
Outline the condition of their collections and provide a conservation and collection management plan (a preservation needs assessment)

In the third stage, funding is available to:

Undertake conservation and collection management activities, as recommended in the preservation needs assessment report. This may include conservation treatment, purchase of collection rehousing and storage materials, environmental control and monitoring equipment, digitisation, or cataloguing or collection management software.

CHG also offers grants for collection management training projects.

The Churchill Trust was set up in 1965 after the death of Sir Winston Churchill, when the Australian public gave generously in what was one of the country’s largest ever door-knock appeals. Almost six decades ago, on 28 February 1965, the “Churchill Memorial Sunday” doorknock appeal was held across Australia. The doorknock was to raise funds for an unusual type of memorial to Sir Winston. The concept, endorsed by Churchill before he died, was Fellowships, bearing his name, for ordinary people – providing a unique opportunity to travel, learn, and bring knowledge back to their country. Such was the admiration and respect that Australian fighting men and women of World War II held for Churchill, that this became one of the greatest one-day doorknocks in Australian history. Since then, the Winston Churchill Trust has sent more than 4,600 Australians overseas to pursue their passion and bring what they learned back for the benefit of the community.

ICOMOS Student Competition 2023: 1960+ / Pleas for the Preservation of Postmodern Buildings | Closes 1 September 2023

The student competition 1960+ / Postmodernism will be focusing on the undogmatic creations of postmodernism. Students of architecture, interior design, urban planning, art history, restoration, archaeology, or other heritage-related disciplines are invited to use a postmodernist building of their own choice to either investigate its heritage qualities and values or to develop strategies for its (further) use, renovation or communication. The work is to be presented on an A1 poster (in German or English; work in groups of two is possible). The five to ten best works will be awarded prize money totalling 5000€.

Inaugural ACT Historic Places Art Prize | Entries close 5 May 2023

Artists from across the greater Canberra region are invited to participate in a new Art Prize that supports local artists while encouraging a deeper appreciation of Canberra’s cultural and natural heritage through artistic engagement with Lanyon Homestead. The prize pool of over $20,000, includes cash prizes, a Craft and Design Artist prize and exhibition opportunities.

The ACT Historic Places Art Prize is a regional, non-acquisitive competition and exhibition and is open to works in any medium. An exhibition of finalists’ works will be held at Lanyon Homestead from July to October 2023. Entries are now open and close on Friday 5 May 2023. Artists are invited to attend a site briefing to build their understanding of this iconic site.

NEW Embedding a Rights-Based Approach and Decolonisation into Heritage Conservation | London | Hybrid | 25 April 2023, 9am-6:30pm BST

Demonstrating a participatory approach that identifies a range of stakeholders is now a necessary element for World Heritage site nominations and a Rights-Based Approach (RBA) is encouraged for the management of all existing sites.

This conference is aimed at exploring the features of a RBA and its application within the UK context. This goes beyond nomination and into the day-to-day management of our World Heritage sites. It will explore the need to reveal the shared histories and heritage of our unique culturally diverse nation. It should also reinforce the longer term sustainability of World Heritage sites and the communities who inhabit and support them.

An RBA approach asserts the importance of considering a diversity of opinions. A plurality of voices can contribute to a better understanding of World Heritage sites and heritage in general, making them more accessible and relevant to today’s society. Such an approach can also make a positive contribution to the narrative around the legacies of Decolonisation and heritage diversity.

All World Heritage sites, and heritage sites more generally, face innumerable challenges. These can only be overcome by empowering communities and other stakeholders to actively engage with processes of interpretation, stewarding and safeguarding of these sites.

A Rights-Based Approach Tool is being developed by ICOMOS which will set out best practice for heritage management. It will provide guidance for practitioners for ensuring that communities and stakeholders are given access to influence all aspects and stages of heritage management.

This conference will help UK heritage professionals and communities understand the key concepts of an RBA, and how they might be utilised and embedded in day-to-day operations.

SAVE THE DATE Everyday Heritage Symposium – Museum of Sydney | Sydney | In-person | 19 July 2023

Everyday Heritage Linkage Project is a collaboration between researchers from the universities of Canberra, Tasmania, Western Australia, and New South Wales and Partner Organisation GML Heritage. The project aims to expand the concept of ‘everyday heritage’ as a way to encompass overlooked forms of Australian heritage and seeks to bridge academic and industry practice. The project team will host an in-person one-day Symposium at the Museum of Sydney on Wednesday 19 July 2023 to share research findings and encourage discussion across community, industry and academic contexts.

The Symposium’s Keynote Speaker is Professor Sian Jones, University of Stirling, UK, an interdisciplinary scholar with expertise in cultural heritage, as well as on the role of the past in the production of power, identity, and sense of place. Sian is the lead author of the recently published The Object of Conservation: An Ethnography of Heritage Practice. The Symposium will have a focus on available and new tools and methods for better exploring and understanding everyday heritage. Speakers and panellists will include team members from the Everyday Heritage Project, as well as leading Australian and international special guests who are working at the intersections of heritage practice and theory. Topics to be covered by panel discussions will include social value methods and digital approaches.

The Symposium is also an Australia ICOMOS event that promotes the ICOMOS 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium which will take place in Sydney (31 August – 9 September).

NEW Enduring Design Masterclass 2023 Applications Open Now | Closes 15 April 2023

Applications for the Enduring Design Masterclass 2023 in Australia are open now. The masterclass is an intensive accredited programme in the Masters of Architecture that provides built environment students with a practical understanding of traditional building techniques and knowledge; from timber-framing and stonemasonry skills through to Indigenous perspectives and enduring design philosophies. Run in partnership with the Prince’s Trust Australia and the University of Queensland, the Masterclass will provide a strong, hands-on grounding in the diverse traditional building cultures of Australia and reconnect students with the design traditions that have stood the test of time to build well; both today and for all ages. Duration: 26 June 2023 – 19 August 2023 (weekends excluded)
The 10-day hands-on intensive will run from 03 July – 14 July. All students must attend in person for this intensive. Lectures and tutorials will be run at other times during the teaching period. These will be run in on campus for UQ students and/or remotely if necessary by arrangement for cross-institutional students.

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for the course, you must be enrolled in a Master of Architecture program at any Australian university.

Cost: All students pay standard course fees as per a regular UQ Master of Architecture subject. All participants will be required to wear steel-capped boots on certain making days and pay for public transport to attend off-campus locations.

NEW Positions available on Earthquake Engineering and Structural Health Monitoring (PhD Students)

The Historical and Masonry Structures (HMS) group of the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), University of Minho, Portugal, plans to open two PhD student positions (duration of the contract planned for 3 years).

The positions will focus on (i) Seismic assessment of the out-of-plane behavior of masonry structures and (ii) Deep learning-based visual inspection systems for structural health monitoring.

(i) Seismic assessment of the out-of-plane behavior of masonry structures:
Necessary qualifications: MSc degree in Civil Engineering or Earthquake Engineering. A strong background in structural dynamics and masonry structures with a passion for numerical modelling and code-based assessment, or similar qualifications, would be considered an asset.

(ii) Deep learning-based visual inspection systems for structural health monitoring:
Necessary qualifications: MSc degree in Civil Engineering or similar. A good understanding of damage identification, artificial intelligence and computer-vision, would be considered an asset.

Students completing their MSc degree in the next months are invited to demonstrate their interest in the position.

The Australian Heritage Festival Event VIC Registration Now Open | Closes 10 April 2023

The Australian Heritage Festival is Australia’s largest annual community-driven heritage festival. In Victoria the Festival is comprised of events from across the state organised by National Trust properties and Member’s Branches, local historical societies, community museums, local councils, Traditional Owner groups, heritage enthusiasts and other aligned organisations. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) coordinates the registration of festival events in the state, promoting the program to a wide audience with an interest in culture and heritage. The 2023 Australian Heritage Festival in Victoria will run for four weeks from Tuesday 18th April to Thursday 18th May.

The 2023 festival will explore the theme Shared Stories. Organisations and individuals are encouraged to register events that tell the stories of who we are, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Victoria’s First Peoples, tales that tell of place, buildings, natural and cultural landscapes, storied objects, oral histories and cultural traditions.
