NEW GA2023 Side Event | Caring for Country Workshop: Indigenous Voices on Culture, Heritage and the Climate Crisis | 2 September 2023, 8:30am-5pm

Hosted by: Australia ICOMOS and the Australian Museum with support from the Getty Conservation Institute
Time: 8.30am – 5pm
Venue: The Australian Museum, corner of William Street and College Street, Sydney
Cost per delegate*: $80 for GA2023 Registrants, $40 for Students, Young and Emerging Professional Registrants
Inclusions: Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea is included in the registration

This day-long workshop highlights Indigenous peoples on the frontline of a climate crisis they did not create, which threatens cultural identity and magnifies longstanding issues of territory and appropriation. The workshop will give Indigenous participants a voice, to inform National, regional and international policy and action, and focus attention on cultural impacts and lack of effective action in response to climate change.

*By registering at this event you consent to being filmed. Films of this event may be used for climate change information and education and some film footage may also be incorporated in other films on climate change.

Indicative Program/Itinerary

In the morning we will hear presentations by our two keynote speakers, Maina Talia, from the island of Vaitupu, Tuvalu, and advocate for the people of Tuvalu in the international arena, and Jason Wilson, an Aboriginal man (Murri) and Chair of the Narran Lakes Joint Management Committee. The afternoon program will feature panellists discussing key points on climate change and impacts on Indigenous heritage and country. This will be followed by a breakout session with all participants discussing in groups. Following reporting on findings from the Breakout session, we will fine-tune a resolution to go to GA2023 and a possible statement to governments.

NEW Get ready for this year’s International Day on Monuments and Sites! | Submissions close 20 March 2023

In 1982, ICOMOS established 18 April as the International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS), followed by UNESCO adoption during its 22nd General Conference. Each year, ICOMOS proposes a theme for activities to be organised by its members and partners – and anyone who wants to join in marking the Day. This year’s IDMS features the following theme: HERITAGE CHANGES.

ICOMOS National Committees (NCs), International Scientific Committees (ISCs), Working Groups (WG), and Task Forces, and all those who wish to celebrate the Day, may refer to the following focus questions:

> How can cultural heritage conservation drive climate action?
> How do local and traditional knowledge systems contribute to developing viable climate adaptation measures?
> How can local and traditional knowledge systems mitigate future climate change risks and impacts?
> What actions are the ICOMOS National Committees, International Scientific Committees, Working Groups, and Task Forces taking in response to the increasing risks and impacts of climate change?

ICOMOS Committees, members and all those wishing to celebrate the IDMS are warmly invited to showcase the myriad ways in which traditional knowledge is/can be employed to address climate change in transformative ways.

Have your say – Preparing heritage places for climate change impacts | Closes 20 March 2023

Influence the approach to climate change and heritage in NSW

Heritage NSW is developing a Climate Change Preparedness Action Plan to help address the impacts of climate change on heritage places in NSW. We want to identify practical responses to the challenges posed to heritage in NSW by climate change, and ways to include climate change issues in existing heritage practice and administration. The draft action plan outlines practical actions for each of the draft Climate Change Principles adopted by the Heritage Council of NSW. Heritage NSW are now seeking feedback on the draft Climate Change Principles and key draft actions from stakeholders such as government agencies, local councils, Local Aboriginal Land Councils, Aboriginal communities, heritage owners, consultants and the general public.

Have your say here.

Tell us what you like and what you think may help us to improve the action plan. Your feedback will inform the final action plan to help shape how we prepare heritage places in NSW for the impacts of climate change.

This consultation is open for feedback until 20 March 2023.

NEW Community Heritage Grants 2023 Round – Now Open | New applicants closes 8 May 2023

The Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program supports community-based organisations to identify and care for Australian cultural heritage collections which are publicly accessible, locally held and nationally significant.

The CHG supports small, local groups with limited funding and staffing resources, who would benefit from access to professional cultural heritage expertise. Grants of up to $20,000 are available to help organisations undertake a three-stage journey to document their collection, identify collection care recommendations and implement practical improvements and enhancements. Non-profit, incorporated organisations – including historical societies, archives, regional museums, public libraries, community groups, multicultural and Indigenous organisations – are encouraged to apply. For more details visit the CHG website.

In the first two stages, organisations work with experienced heritage practitioners to produce reports that;

  • Explain the meanings and value of their collections (a significance assessment)
  • Outline the condition of their collections and provide a conservation and collection management plan (a preservation needs assessment)

In the third stage, funding is available to:

  • Undertake conservation and collection management activities, as recommended in the preservation needs assessment report. This may include conservation treatment, purchase of collection rehousing and storage materials, environmental control and monitoring equipment, digitisation, or cataloguing or collection management software.

CHG also offers grants for collection management training projects.

Applicants should carefully read the 2023 Community Heritage Grants program guidelines before applying. The guidelines and the application form are available at here.

NEW Churchill Fellowships: Travel the world to pursue your passion | Closes 1 May 2023, 5pm AEST

Would you like to travel overseas for four to eight weeks to explore a topic or issue that you’re passionate about, and come back and share your knowledge for the benefit of Australia? Why not apply for a Churchill Fellowship?

Churchill Fellows have created some of the most well-known innovations, and include Questacon, the Playschool Theme song, and Unit Pricing in Supermarkets, Neighbourhood
watch, just to name a few.

The Churchill Trust was set up in 1965 after the death of Sir Winston Churchill, when the Australian public gave generously in what was one of the country’s largest ever door-knock appeals. Almost six decades ago, on 28 February 1965, the “Churchill Memorial Sunday” doorknock appeal was held across Australia. The doorknock was to raise funds for an unusual type of memorial to Sir Winston. The concept, endorsed by Churchill before he died, was Fellowships, bearing his name, for ordinary people – providing a unique opportunity to travel, learn, and bring knowledge back to their country. Such was the admiration and respect that Australian fighting men and women of World War II held for Churchill, that this became one of the greatest one-day doorknocks in Australian history. Since then, the Winston Churchill Trust has sent more than 4,600 Australians overseas to pursue their passion and bring what they learned back for the benefit of the community.

2023 application round open 1 March 9:00am – 1 May 5.00pm AEST
Would you like to know more? A series of information sessions have been recorded and are available for people to view online here.
Applications for the 2023 Churchill Fellowship round open 1 March for travel commencing in November. To find out more visit www.churchilltrust.com.au

The CCRP is a government funded state-wide initiative that provides regional communities with the opportunity to digitally preserve their collections and receive onsite training in collections care, preventative conservation and disaster mitigation in the face of future natural disaster events.

Organisations will receive up to six days of onsite training, including hands on training in collections care and digitisation, as well as the opportunity to select a half day intensive workshop focusing on one of the following themes:

This project is entirely free of charge, with all organisations receiving high-quality digital files of their collection items, relevant resources, and high-level training to ensure long-term safekeeping of their collections. As part of the project, local community members will be invited to participate in a public digitisation day, enabling personal precious items to also be documented for safekeeping. Spaces will be limited, and the location of these sessions will be decided in consultation with the participating organisations.

Eligible organisations must:

  • Be located in Victoria
  • Have 3+ volunteers or staff available to participate in training at all onsite days
  • Are available between mid-April to July for two rounds of three-day onsite training sessions, to be held approximately three weeks apart

Further information about the project, including the link to the online application can be found here: AMaGA Victoria | Resilience Project. Please note the deadline for submission is 11:59 pm on 12 March 2023. We understand this is a short circulation period, but we will be opening a second EOI round most likely in late May/early June to allow for additional groups to take part in the program.
