NEW Australia ICOMOS for the final speaker series of 2022: Perspectives from the public sector | Perth | 8 December 2022, 5:30-7:30pm

Please join Australia ICOMOS for the final speaker series of 2022, Perspectives from the public sector. Speakers are:

Callum Crofton, Manager in the Policy and Practice section of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, will reflect on some of the activities, updates and events in WA’s heritage over the past year. This will include changes to the regulatory environment, current consultations, hot topics and more.

Kelly Fleming, Assistant Manager in the Historic Heritage Conservation division (Heritage Assessment & Registration team) of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage will provide a brief background to the WA Thematic project, its purpose, the approach taken & the stages to date. The Thematic History of Western Australia was compiled by Historian Clare Menck for the Heritage Council of Western Australia in 2018. Kelly will also provide a brief overview of how the WA Thematic is used by the Department & the Heritage Council, and some information about where to from here.

GA2023 Youth Forum Applications are open!

The GA2023 Youth Forum will be held on Cockatoo Island / Wareamah – part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property, over three days from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 September 2023, with generous support from the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

This event will welcome emerging heritage professionals from across the world to share skills and experiences, debate contemporary heritage issues, discuss innovative practices, and pose outcomes for the future of heritage.

We’re thrilled to announce Round 1 for Expressions of Interest are now open. Below you will find more information on the application process and timelines.

World Heritage USA | International Exchange Program | applications close January 2023

World Heritage USA, the United States Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, is seeking graduate students and emerging professionals specialized in historic preservation and heritage conservation to participate in an International Exchange Program (IEP) during the summer of 2023. Interns will be assigned to a 10-12 week, practical working internship, under professional supervision, with a public or private nonprofit heritage organization. These positions are for interns with an undergraduate degree in a preservation or conservation related field such as history, architecture, archaeology, conservation, art history, cultural resource management, or cultural tourism.

Community War Memorials Fund 2022/23 | NSW | applications close 13 February 2023

Is there a community war memorial in your local area in need of repair or restoration?

Applications are now open for a new round of the NSW Government’s Community War Memorials Fund. Grants of up to $10,000 are available for the conservation of local war memorials, including specialist heritage advice and physical work.

Grant applications are open to local councils and community organisations, including memorial trusts, veteran groups and crown land managers.

Applications close 13 February 2023.

Inaugural ACT Historic Places Art Prize | entries close 5 May 2023

Artists from across the greater Canberra region are invited to participate in a new Art Prize that supports local artists while encouraging a deeper appreciation of Canberra’s cultural and natural heritage through artistic engagement with Lanyon Homestead.  The prize pool of over $20,000, includes cash prizes, a Craft and Design Artist prize and exhibition opportunities.

The ACT Historic Places Art Prize is a regional, non-acquisitive competition and exhibition and is open to works in any medium. An exhibition of finalists’ works will be held at Lanyon Homestead from July to October 2023. Entries are now open and close on Friday 5 May 2023. Artists are invited to attend a site briefing to build their understanding of this iconic site.

NEW ‘Drawing For Architecture’: Sydney University | Sydney | 9 December 2022, 10:00 am-3:00pm

Join Prince’s Trust Australia and INTBAU Australia at the beautiful and historic Sydney University Quadrangle for an exciting one-day workshop introducing students to the art of architectural drawing. Taught by Alexander Dowthwaite, this workshop will introduce students to traditional methods of architectural drawing with a focus on cultivating the “art of seeing”, or understanding the composition of heritage buildings through drawing. Through a “pencil-and-paper” approach, students will gain an appreciation of the design patterns that underly Australia’s architectural heritage and learn to decode the meanings behind the composition of our historic buildings and places.

When: Friday the 9th of December, 10AM – 3PM (lunch provided)

Heritage South Australia is responsible for the protection, management and promotion of State Heritage Places and Areas in South Australia. We are looking for an experienced Heritage Architect/Officer to join our dynamic team, to contribute to the delivery of expert state-level heritage advice to government and property owners. You will be involved in heritage management and provide heritage impact assessment advice for development applications involving over 2500 heritage places and 17 State Heritage Areas across the State. You will also prepare heritage policy for government and influence future heritage directions within the State.

Philip Leeson Architects is looking for an individual with interest and experience in heritage practice, a grounding in architecture would be ideal. To be considered for the position, you should have: 

  • Education and / or on the job training in heritage management; 
  • Experience with / particular interest in the built environment / built heritage;
  • Excellent written communication skills; 
  • Willingness to learn, engage, ask questions and up skill; and 
  • Interpersonal and oral communication skills, and be able to work collaboratively within a team and for diverse clients. 

We are after an individual who can grow into the role with a view to a long- term commitment to our team and our practice. The position could be part time or full time, depending on the individual.
