ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Cultural Routes (CIIC) | Symposium on “Historic Roads in the Context of Cultural Routes” | call for papers closes 20 May
The International Scientific Committee on Cultural Routes (CIIC) of ICOMOS will hold its annual symposium in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, on 15 and 16 September 2022. The main theme of this year’s event is “Historic Roads and the context of cultural routes”. The city of Santa Fe is an ideal place to explore the relationship between cultural routes and historical roads. Indigenous peoples established routes throughout the region, and later Spanish settlers made Santa Fe the terminus of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a cultural route linking the colonial capital of Mexico City to its northern border in New Mexico. The Old Spanish Trail, Santa Fe Trail and Route 66 also converge on Santa Fe, which was designated a UNESCO Creative City in 2005.
For more information, please visit the website https://ciicicomos.org/en/2022-meeting/.
The deadline for abstract submission is Friday, May 20, 2022.

ACT Heritage Symposium 2022 | Heritage and Healing: How Heritage Helps [?] | Canberra | call for papers closes 27 May
Symposium to be held on Saturday 13 August 2022 at the ANU Acton Campus.
Health and wellbeing have come to the fore in society owing to the challenges of recent years where dramatic changes have been imposed on our normal way of life. In response to lockdowns and natural disasters, there is a desire for bringing people together to promote the health and healing of our communities.
Join us for the 2022 ACT Region Heritage Symposium to explore the following questions:
- What role could heritage have in enhancing our wellbeing and enriching our lives?
- How have our heritage and its intangible values given us a sense of place, of a continuity from the past to present?
- How can cultural engagement contribute to healing?
You are invited to offer a paper, or a short 5-minute vignette, related to the above.
Please send your proposals to: heritage@nationaltrustact.org

Australian Heritage Advocacy Alliance | 2022 Federal Election Campaign
The Australian Heritage Advocacy Alliance is a national advocacy campaign designed to raise awareness about the value of heritage assets and to influence the heritage policy agenda at a key political moment – the 2022 Federal Election.
AHAA has no membership base. It is simply an alliance of concerned heritage stakeholders and enthusiasts – organisations, groups, networks, individuals, etc.– all sharing a serious concern that currently there is no effective national heritage agenda to preserve, manage and fund our national heritage assets.

Behind the scenes at The Orpheum | Cremorne, Sydney | 30 May, 6.30pm AEST
For one night only, Ian Hoskins and Peter Sheridan will take centre stage to showcase the history of The Orpheum and its architecture (with a few snippets about glamorous stars and starlets). You’ll learn about its renowned architect; be shocked at how developers turned it into a shopping arcade; and marvel at the way Mike Walsh brought it back to its former glory. In a project that took Walsh many years, loving attention was paid to art deco restoration – including a Mighty Wurlitzer organ from the Fresno Theatre in California. Surprisingly, The Orpheum is not on the State Heritage Register, but moves are definitely underway.

Just released: Across Bass Strait by Australia ICOMOS member Jane Lennon
Just released: Jane Lennon’s new book, Across Bass Strait, a history of the connection between squatters, merchants and mariners to develop the livestock trade from the mainland to Van Diemen’s Land. This long distant connection is reflected in the transformation of the landscape, both on land and sea, underwritten by the need to provide meat, link distant shores which until now have been barely acknowledged in the national narrative yet – from the edges of the two coast lines – illustrate the layered environmental history of our continent. This little-known story deals with food miles, wind power, seasonal conditions, competition and determined people, all themes still relevant today. Jane is an Honorary member of ICOMOS for her distinguished service to conservation in Australia and internationally. Across Bass Strait is available from Anchor Books Australia, www.anchorbooksaustralia.com.au and may be ordered from all good book stores, ISBN 9780648835035.

Australia ICOMOS Mentoring Program – calling for mentors! | EOIs close 13 May
It’s here again! We need Australia ICOMOS members based in New South Wales and Victoria to step up and join us as mentors for students from the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Latrobe University and Deakin University.
This year we are part of a global effort to mentor students aiming for careers in cultural heritage. Our program has run since 2011 and has been enthusiastically received by both mentors and mentees. We always have many more students than mentors apply – this restricts the size of the program, so we rely on the generosity of ICOMOS members so that as many students as possible can be paired. Please join if you can!
What is required?
It is very easy to be a mentor. We ask mentors to meet with their mentees at least 3 times during the program between May and October. These meetings can be in-person or virtual, and allow discussion about issues involved in heritage practice, and the student’s study and work interests.
We will be holding launch events in Melbourne and Sydney soon – and will link up nationally by zoom during the program.
There will be a brief evaluation questionnaire distributed at the end of the year that we ask all participants to complete and return.
How do I get involved as a MENTOR?
If you would like to be an ICOMOS MENTOR, please email an expression of interest to Elizabeth Gralton at the Australia ICOMOS Secretariat (austicomos@deakin.edu.au) by CoB on Friday, 13 May 2022.
Please provide your contact details (email and a work or mobile number) and a brief outline of your field of professional experience, interests and current practice. This will assist the Mentoring Team in matching mentors and mentees.
Mentors must be Full ICOMOS members and can have professional experience in any sector of cultural heritage practice. We will try to ‘match’ by interest as many students and mentors as possible.
Mentors in other States and Territories: we often have mentoring opportunities in other States and Territories (for students studying by distance through one of the participating Universities). So, if you are keen, but don’t live in Victoria or NSW – please send us your EOI. We will see what’s possible!
How do I get involved as a MENTEE?
Students in participating university courses will be advised of the application process by the focal point at their university. Please contact the person at your university as a first step.
When do we start?
We will be matching students and mentors and hosting the launch events in May. ‘Save the date’ information will be provided shortly. We hope that members based in participating States will welcome this opportunity to participate in the efforts of Australia ICOMOS and its partners to support students and emerging professionals across a range of cultural heritage disciplines.

‘Victorian Painting’ | talk by Prof Miles Lewis | presented by Hotham History Project | Melbourne + online | 25 May
Heritage paint colour controls in Victoria, and to a large extent in Australia, are based mainly upon a document prepared 45 years ago by Miles Lewis and his then research assistant Alison Blake (now Bishop Alison Taylor). Today those controls are substantially unchanged, except for the cumulative inaccuracies which have crept in over time. But much more research has been undertaken by Lewis and others.
In this presentation Lewis will discuss both aspects – the fundamental principles underlying the original controls, and the further information now available, covering stucco and cement finishes, unpainted surfaces, paint types, natural colours, ready-mixed paints, conventions for external colours on buildings, signwriting, conservation colour controls, the paint colours bulletin, the Munsell colour system, paint layers and microscope analysis, sanded finishes and other topics.
Date: Wednesday 25 May
Location: Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership, 603-615 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne
Time: 7.30-9.00pm AEST
Seats are strictly limited. Click here for more information and to book tickets.
