The Australia ICOMOS President’s Award recognises the important contribution made by the active engagement of younger and/or emerging career heritage practitioners. The award is open to Australia ICOMOS members and non-members.

There are two categories for the President’s Award:

A student / young / emerging heritage practitioner; and
A trainee / apprentice or emerging tradesperson.

Winners of each category will be awarded a certificate, a 1 year Associate membership of Australia ICOMOS and $1000 cash prize!

Any nominees conferred a judges commendation will also be awarded a certificate and gift voucher (max value $100).

National Archaeology Week is just over two weeks away – 15 to 21 May across Australia!

National Archaeology Week aims to increase public awareness of Australian archaeology and the work of Australian archaeologists both at home and abroad, and to promote the importance of protecting Australia’s unique archaeological heritage. This year, we are celebrating 20 years of NAW – we would love to hear from you with any memories or photos!

Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology | online seminar | The historical archaeology of Australia’s place in the colonial Indian Ocean world | Prof Alistair Paterson | 18 May, 6pm AEST

The Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (ASHA) is running a 2022 bi-monthly online seminar series in order to showcase the great archaeological research currently being undertaken in Australia.

The second seminar will be on The historical archaeology of Australia’s place in the colonial Indian Ocean world, presented by Professor Alistair Paterson from 6pm to 7:30pm on Wednesday 18 May 2022. The talk will run for 45 to 50 minutes, followed by a Q&A session. As the seminar coincides with National Archaeology Week 2022, the winners of the 2022 ASHA Awards program will be announced following the completion of the Q&A session.

South Australian Election | Labor’s Heritage Policy

In the context of the recent South Australian election, the ALP released a policy paper regarding future heritage initiatives in that State. Labor has been elected into Government as will be recalled.

Given this and other elections around Australia, members in many jurisdictions may be interested in this initiative.

Victorian Unions declare Green Ban on John Curtin Hotel

The Victorian union movement has declared a Green Ban on the John Curtin Hotel in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton. This follows the recent sale of the hotel to an unknown purchaser, and concerns that the site will be redeveloped. Located opposite Trades Hall, the pub has a strong and enduring association with the labour movement in Victoria, including the trade union movement and the Australian Labor Party. The hotel also has strong historical associations with union leader Norm Gallagher and the Builders Labourers Federation, who played a pivotal role in the Green Ban movement of the 1970s to protect Melbourne’s heritage, including places threatened by redevelopment such as the Regent Theatre, the City Baths, Royal Parade, and the Bakery Hill historic site in Ballarat. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has partnered with the Victorian Trades Hall Council to nominate the site to the Victorian Heritage Register. Read more via the ABC.

Australia ICOMOS Mentoring Program – calling for mentors!

It’s here again! We need Australia ICOMOS members based in New South Wales and Victoria to step up and join us as mentors for students from the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Latrobe University and Deakin University.

This year we are part of a global effort to mentor students aiming for careers in cultural heritage. Our program has run since 2011 and has been enthusiastically received by both mentors and mentees. We always have many more students than mentors apply – this restricts the size of the program, so we rely on the generosity of ICOMOS members so that as many students as possible can be paired. Please join if you can!

What is required?
It is very easy to be a mentor. We ask mentors to meet with their mentees at least 3 times during the program between May and October. These meetings can be in-person or virtual, and allow discussion about issues involved in heritage practice, and the student’s study and work interests.

We will be holding launch events in Melbourne and Sydney soon – and will link up nationally by zoom during the program.

There will be a brief evaluation questionnaire distributed at the end of the year that we ask all participants to complete and return.

How do I get involved as a MENTOR?
If you would like to be an ICOMOS MENTOR, please email an expression of interest to Elizabeth Gralton at the Australia ICOMOS Secretariat (austicomos@deakin.edu.au) by CoB on Friday, 13 May 2022.

Please provide your contact details (email and a work or mobile number) and a brief outline of your field of professional experience, interests and current practice. This will assist the Mentoring Team in matching mentors and mentees.

Mentors must be Full ICOMOS members and can have professional experience in any sector of cultural heritage practice. We will try to ‘match’ by interest as many students and mentors as possible.

Mentors in other States and Territories: we often have mentoring opportunities in other States and Territories (for students studying by distance through one of the participating Universities). So, if you are keen, but don’t live in Victoria or NSW – please send us your EOI. We will see what’s possible!

How do I get involved as a MENTEE?
Students in participating university courses will be advised of the application process by the focal point at their university. Please contact the person at your university as a first step.

When do we start?
We will be matching students and mentors and hosting the launch events in May. ‘Save the date’ information will be provided shortly. We hope that members based in participating States will welcome this opportunity to participate in the efforts of Australia ICOMOS and its partners to support students and emerging professionals across a range of cultural heritage disciplines.

Tasmania Draft Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment Bill 2022 | community consultation | submissions close 12 May

The Tasmanian Government is currently inviting feedback on the draft of the Land Use Planning and Approval Amendment Bill 2022. The Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 (LUPA Act) was amended in 2020 to introduce the major projects assessment process. Applying the new major projects assessment process to the new Bridgewater Bridge project identified where some improvements to the process could be made and the Government is now seeking to address these with the draft Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment Bill 2022 (PDF, 992.7 KB) (draft Bill). The draft Bill is now available for comment.

Inner West Council (NSW) | Built Environment Awards – Marrickville Medal | call for jury nominations | closes 15 May

Inner West Council is seeking nominations from local heritage societies/associations for a member of their group with appropriate expertise to be part of a jury for the 2022 Inner West Built Environment Awards (Marrickville Medal).

The Marrickville Medal for Conservation has been awarded annually since 1995 and was one of the first awards of its kind to be established in New South Wales. It celebrates built conservation works that contribute to the understanding and preservation of the Inner West’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.

The award is aligned with the state-wide National Trust Heritage Festival held in April–May every year. It is open to all building works within the Inner West Council area, completed in the past three years, having positive conservation outcomes, including preservation, restoration, reconstruction, adaptation & interpretation. Works can be large or small, private or public, but the judges will be looking for thoughtful and innovative outcomes. This is a link to Council’s website, showing previous winners:

The judging panel’s role will include a review of applications, a site visit of the short-listed applications (one full-day weekend required in July 2022), and meeting/s with the judging panel to discuss, evaluate and select the winner, and to assist with the writing of jury comments. Additionally, attendance at the awards ceremony in September 2022 to assist in the presentation of the awards.

Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action | call for proposals | closes 7 May

FAR-First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis, a flagship Programme of ICCROM, is pleased to invite project proposals for its next multi-level capacity development project Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action.

Net Zero is an 18-month project (July 2022 – 31 December 2023) which aims to enhance risk reduction and coping capacities of vulnerable heritage communities. It sets to implement field projects at five innovation sites, in five risk-prone countries, using heritage to mitigate climate change, as well as reduce the risks of disasters and conflicts. The field experience will feed into an international training of change agents and community leaders. A final international symposium and publication will act as catalysts to inform policy and expand the outreach of the project by sharing the know-how on heritage for climate action in 25-30 countries suffering from acute environmental stresses.

Proposals are invited from institutions and organizations which are highly motivated and have worked on successfully implementing projects on cultural heritage safeguard, sustainable development, disaster risk reduction and/or climate action. Additionally, we encourage applications from organizations working in regions suffering from acute environmental stresses, visible in the form of frequent extreme hazard events and/or climate-driven conflicts.

National Library of Australia | Community Heritage Grants | applications close 9 May

The Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program supports community-based organisations to identify and care for Australian cultural heritage collections which are publicly accessible, locally held and nationally significant.

The CHG supports small, local groups with limited funding and staffing resources, who would benefit from access to professional cultural heritage expertise. Grants of up to $15,000 are available to help organisations undertake a three-stage journey to document their collection, identify collection care recommendations and implement practical improvements and enhancements.

PhD opportunity | Control Systems for Testing and Earthquake Engineering | University of Minho, Portugal | closes 16 May

One PhD grant (duration of the planned grant is 3 years) is available to join the HybridNET project, which is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Advanced Master in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions | Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Spain | applications close May 20

SAHC is a leading international Masters Course in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions. The objective of SAHC is to offer an advanced education programme on the engineering of conservation of structures, with a focus on architectural heritage. The main focus of this training is the application of scientific principles in analysis, innovation and practice of conservation of monuments and historical constructions worldwide.

This Master Course is organized by a Consortium of leading European Universities/Research Institutions in the field, composed by University of Minho (coordinating institution, Portugal), the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain), the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic), the University of Padua (Italy) and the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czech Republic).

The course combines the most recent advances in research and development with practical applications. A significant number of scholarships, ranging from 4,000 to 13,000 Euro, are available to students of any nationality.

‘Victorian Painting’ | talk by Prof Miles Lewis | presented by Hotham History Project | Melbourne + online | 25 May

Heritage paint colour controls in Victoria, and to a large extent in Australia, are based mainly upon a document prepared 45 years ago by Miles Lewis and his then research assistant Alison Blake (now Bishop Alison Taylor). Today those controls are substantially unchanged, except for the cumulative inaccuracies which have crept in over time. But much more research has been undertaken by Lewis and others.

In this presentation Lewis will discuss both aspects – the fundamental principles underlying the original controls, and the further information now available, covering stucco and cement finishes, unpainted surfaces, paint types, natural colours, ready-mixed paints, conventions for external colours on buildings, signwriting, conservation colour controls, the paint colours bulletin, the Munsell colour system, paint layers and microscope analysis, sanded finishes and other topics.

We are looking for a highly motivated self-starter with a passion for heritage, and the ability to help us grow our heritage services which support our members, the broader community, and the custodians of heritage places. The National Trust NSW is seeking a highly organised and efficient Administrative Coordinator to be the powerhouse behind our small but mighty Conservation team.

About You

Greater than 3-5 years’ experience in a built heritage consulting environment.
Tertiary qualifications (ideally with Honours, or Masters level) in architecture, planning, cultural heritage or an affiliated discipline.
A holistic geographical approach to built heritage and site development, contemplating landscape, and archaeological factors.
Architectural/urban/master planning experience well regarded.
Demonstrated experience in preparing quality heritage advice.
Excel in a multi-disciplinary team environment and deftly manage budgetary and time constraints
Detailed knowledge of Victorian state and local government statutory requirements

Design 5 is an inner-city architecture studio specialising in built heritage conservation, adaptive reuse and associated new work, with a broad range of interesting and challenging projects, primarily in NSW, from new structures in significant contexts, to detailed conservation work.

We are seeking an architecture graduate, with a minimum of 2 years experience and an interest in conservation and adaptive reuse to join our team on a full time basis.

The role includes:

assisting with design and documentation including DAs and construction
liaising with clients and consultants
preparation of reports including Heritage Impact Assessments and CMPs
archival research

Key attributes:

Training in architecture with design and documentation skills
Interest in conservation and adaptive reuse
Competence with Microsoft Word and familiarity with InDesign
Competence with CAD / Vectorworks or similar – optional
Good research and communication skills including technical report writing
Confident attitude, highly motivated and willingness to contribute positively to the culture of the practice

We are currently seeking a Senior Heritage Consultant to join the NBRS team. This is a great opportunity to be involved in a wide range of projects encompassing all aspects of heritage management and conservation.

NBRS work with heritage sites of local, State and Commonwealth levels of significance across a wide range of projects. We work across Australia and internationally out of our Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane studios.

Reporting to the Practice Lead, you will be involved in all areas of heritage architecture, management and conservation practice. The role involves direct client and consultant liaison, assessment of heritage issues, preparation of written advice and the provision of heritage advice throughout construction projects.

You will have the opportunity to work independently on projects of all scales, as well as collaborating with our close-knit team. You will be involved in heritage assessments, nominations and studies; heritage impact statements; conservation management plans and conservation works schedules.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable managing projects independently as well as leading larger teams.
