Australia ICOMOS Mentoring Program – calling for mentors!

It’s here again! We need Australia ICOMOS members based in New South Wales and Victoria to step up and join us as mentors for students from the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Latrobe University and Deakin University.

This year we are part of a global effort to mentor students aiming for careers in cultural heritage. Our program has run since 2011 and has been enthusiastically received by both mentors and mentees. We always have many more students than mentors apply – this restricts the size of the program, so we rely on the generosity of ICOMOS members so that as many students as possible can be paired. Please join if you can!

What is required?
It is very easy to be a mentor. We ask mentors to meet with their mentees at least 3 times during the program between May and October. These meetings can be in-person or virtual, and allow discussion about issues involved in heritage practice, and the student’s study and work interests.

We will be holding launch events in Melbourne and Sydney soon – and will link up nationally by zoom during the program.

There will be a brief evaluation questionnaire distributed at the end of the year that we ask all participants to complete and return.

How do I get involved as a MENTOR? 
If you would like to be an ICOMOS MENTOR, please email an expression of interest to Elizabeth Gralton at the Australia ICOMOS Secretariat (austicomos@deakin.edu.au) by CoB on Friday, 13 May 2022.

Please provide your contact details (email and a work or mobile number) and a brief outline of your field of professional experience, interests and current practice. This will assist the Mentoring Team in matching mentors and mentees. 

Mentors must be Full ICOMOS members and can have professional experience in any sector of cultural heritage practice. We will try to ‘match’ by interest as many students and mentors as possible. 

Mentors in other States and Territories: we often have mentoring opportunities in other States and Territories (for students studying by distance through one of the participating Universities). So, if you are keen, but don’t live in Victoria or NSW – please send us your EOI. We will see what’s possible!

How do I get involved as a MENTEE? 
Students in participating university courses will be advised of the application process by the focal point at their university. Please contact the person at your university as a first step. 

When do we start? 
We will be matching students and mentors and hosting the launch events in May. ‘Save the date’ information will be provided shortly. We hope that members based in participating States will welcome this opportunity to participate in the efforts of Australia ICOMOS and its partners to support students and emerging professionals across a range of cultural heritage disciplines.

New submission | Australian Archaeological Association and Australia ICOMOS on a New Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Protection Act Consultation Paper — Tasmania

A joint submission has been made on this Tasmanian Government Consultation Paper by the Australian Archaeological Association and Australia ICOMOS, two national peak bodies concerned with the protection and long-term management of cultural heritage in Australia, including Aboriginal cultural heritage. A joint submission was considered desirable to emphasise the similar viewpoints within the cultural heritage profession on this important matter of developing new Aboriginal heritage protection legislation for Tasmania.

The submission was developed with input from key members of the Australia ICOMOS Indigenous Heritage Reference Group.

‘Victorian Painting’ | talk by Prof Miles Lewis | presented by Hotham History Project | Melbourne + online | 25 May

Heritage paint colour controls in Victoria, and to a large extent in Australia, are based mainly upon a document prepared 45 years ago by Miles Lewis and his then research assistant Alison Blake (now Bishop Alison Taylor). Today those controls are substantially unchanged, except for the cumulative inaccuracies which have crept in over time. But much more research has been undertaken by Lewis and others.

In this presentation Lewis will discuss both aspects – the fundamental principles underlying the original controls, and the further information now available, covering stucco and cement finishes, unpainted surfaces, paint types, natural colours, ready-mixed paints, conventions for external colours on buildings, signwriting, conservation colour controls, the paint colours bulletin, the Munsell colour system, paint layers and microscope analysis, sanded finishes and other topics.

CAS-ASHA Archaeology Symposium 2022 | National Museum of Australia, Canberra | 30 April

The annual Canberra Archaeological Society — Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology Symposium will be held within the ACT and Region Heritage Festival as it has been in the past.  This year it will return to the National Museum of Australia and be held within the Peninsula Theatre through a partnership with the NMA. 

The event will be themed with the Curiosity theme of this year’s Festival as ‘More than Curious’, expounding on the idea that the pursuit of archaeology is not just motivated by curiosity as it may have been once and that it has tangible value.

It will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 30 April. Admission will be by gold coin donation with advertising and bookings will be via the NMA’s online Calendar facility (bookings via: https://cas-ashasymposium.eventbrite.com.au).  The event will begin with a formal Welcome to Country and comprise four interesting archaeological speakers (both historical and prehistoric) followed by a Q&A panel of the speakers. Sydney Historical Archaeology Practitioners Workshop | University of Sydney | 20 May | call for abstracts closes 4 May

The Sydney Historical Archaeology Practitioners’ (SHAP) Workshop is an opportunity for heritage practitioners from professional consultancies and Government to join students, academics and those with an interest in historical archaeology to gather and discuss advances in historical archaeology and interesting results from excavations undertaken over the last year across the wider Sydney area.

This year’s SHAP workshop will take place at the University of Sydney on 20 May during National Archaeology Week. The workshop theme is ‘Archaeology of Resilience’.

Environmental, climatic and cultural changes have been changing and shaping our lives. The February 2022 floods, the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and the 2019-20 bushfires in NSW have created unprecedented changes to us and the way we live. The study of change and resilience is central to the discipline of archaeology.

Expressions of Interest to present a paper on this topic or any other topic of interest or an emerging issue in Historical Archaeology is welcomed. Abstracts should be sent by 4 May to Agata Calabrese at: SHAP22@comber.net.au

Tasmania Draft Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment Bill 2022 | community consultation | submissions close 12 May 

The Tasmanian Government is currently inviting feedback on the draft of the Land Use Planning and Approval Amendment Bill 2022. The Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 (LUPA Act) was amended in 2020 to introduce the major projects assessment process.  Applying the new major projects assessment process to the new Bridgewater Bridge project identified where some improvements to the process could be made and the Government is now seeking to address these with the draft Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment Bill 2022 (PDF, 992.7 KB) (draft Bill). The draft Bill is now available for comment.

Inner West Council (NSW) | Built Environment Awards – Marrickville Medal | call for jury nominations | closes 15 May

Inner West Council is seeking nominations from local heritage societies/associations for a member of their group with appropriate expertise to be part of a jury for the 2022 Inner West Built Environment Awards (Marrickville Medal). 

The Marrickville Medal for Conservation has been awarded annually since 1995 and was one of the first awards of its kind to be established in New South Wales. It celebrates built conservation works that contribute to the understanding and preservation of the Inner West’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.

The award is aligned with the state-wide National Trust Heritage Festival held in April–May every year. It is open to all building works within the Inner West Council area, completed in the past three years, having positive conservation outcomes, including preservation, restoration, reconstruction, adaptation & interpretation. Works can be large or small, private or public, but the judges will be looking for thoughtful and innovative outcomes. This is a link to Council’s website, showing previous winners:

The judging panel’s role will include a review of applications, a site visit of the short-listed applications (one full-day weekend required in July 2022), and meeting/s with the judging panel to discuss, evaluate and select the winner, and to assist with the writing of jury comments. Additionally, attendance at the awards ceremony in September 2022 to assist in the presentation of the awards.

PhD opportunity | University of Canberra | School of Design and the Built Environment | applications close 30 April

The School of Design and the Built Environment at the University of Canberra has a PhD opportunity for a scholar with interests in heritage and building design for climate resilience. This project will examine whether a focus on the personal and family heritage embodied in the homes of older Australians can help them to find meaning in and motivation to remediate their properties for bushfire resilience. We are looking for a person with skills in both building assessment and design/remediation, and an understanding of the importance of personal heritage and identity for sustaining individuals and families through traumatic experiences.

Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action | call for proposals | closes 7 May

FAR-First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis, a flagship Programme of ICCROM, is pleased to invite project proposals for its next multi-level capacity development project Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action.

Net Zero is an 18-month project (July 2022 – 31 December 2023) which aims to enhance risk reduction and coping capacities of vulnerable heritage communities. It sets to implement field projects at five innovation sites, in five risk-prone countries, using heritage to mitigate climate change, as well as reduce the risks of disasters and conflicts. The field experience will feed into an international training of change agents and community leaders. A final international symposium and publication will act as catalysts to inform policy and expand the outreach of the project by sharing the know-how on heritage for climate action in 25-30 countries suffering from acute environmental stresses. 

Proposals are invited from institutions and organizations which are highly motivated and have worked on successfully implementing projects on cultural heritage safeguard, sustainable development, disaster risk reduction and/or climate action. Additionally, we encourage applications from organizations working in regions suffering from acute environmental stresses, visible in the form of frequent extreme hazard events and/or climate-driven conflicts.

UPDATED: National Library of Australia | Community Heritage Grants | applications close 9 May 

The Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program supports community-based organisations to identify and care for Australian cultural heritage collections which are publicly accessible, locally held and nationally significant. 

The CHG supports small, local groups with limited funding and staffing resources, who would benefit from access to professional cultural heritage expertise. Grants of up to $15,000 are available to help organisations undertake a three-stage journey to document their collection, identify collection care recommendations and implement practical improvements and enhancements.

Advanced Master in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions | Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Spain | applications close May 20

SAHC is a leading international Masters Course in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions. The objective of SAHC is to offer an advanced education programme on the engineering of conservation of structures, with a focus on architectural heritage. The main focus of this training is the application of scientific principles in analysis, innovation and practice of conservation of monuments and historical constructions worldwide.

This Master Course is organized by a Consortium of leading European Universities/Research Institutions in the field, composed by University of Minho (coordinating institution, Portugal), the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain), the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic), the University of Padua (Italy) and the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czech Republic).

The course combines the most recent advances in research and development with practical applications. A significant number of scholarships, ranging from 4,000 to 13,000 Euro, are available to students of any nationality.

We are looking for a highly motivated self-starter with a passion for heritage, and the ability to help us grow our heritage services which support our members, the broader community, and the custodians of heritage places. This position would ideally suit an applicant who is a recent graduate in a related field.

The role will involve working with all members of the Conservation Department, but will primarily be responsible to the Advocacy Manager.  You will be researching and preparing listing nominations to the National Trust Register, and will assist with the preparation of advocacy submissions, conservation policies and position papers.  The role is also responsible for co-ordinating the administration of the Trust’s technical advisory committees and responding to public heritage enquiries, and is likely to gain exposure to our Trust properties and their conservation management.

The National Trust NSW is seeking a highly organised and efficient Administrative Coordinator to be the powerhouse behind our small but mighty Conservation team.

As the Administrative Coordinator, you will be the first point of contact for the National Trust’s Conservation Department on many issues, responding to email and phone enquiries from National Trust members, consultants and the general public as well as monitoring of media.

You hold responsibility for the coordination, improvement and growth of our heritage services, including our property certificates service and our External Restoration Appeals program. You will also have primary responsibility for managing the National Trust Register database, which involves a range of administrative duties from issuing notification letters for new listings and ensuring the Register is up to date and accurate, to filing and archive management.   

This role is ideally suited to someone with a deep passion for heritage and who is looking to start their career in this field.

NEW SITUATION VACANT: Researcher/s in Earthquake Engineering and Masonry | University of Minho, Portugal | closes 16 May 

The Historical and Masonry Structures (HMS) group of the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), University of Minho, Portugal, plans to open one or two positions for a junior or experienced researcher already with a PhD (duration of the contract planned is 3 years) to join the STAND4HERITAGE project, which is funded by a European Research Council Advanced Grant.

One position focuses on design guidelines for performance-based assessment to support the intervention design of heritage buildings. Experience in performance based seismic assessment, vulnerability curves and masonry is ideal. Necessary qualifications: PhD degree in Civil Engineering or Earthquake Engineering.
