The Canberra and Region Heritage Festival is on from 9 April to 1 May. This year’s theme is ‘curiosity’, and the varied and diverse program of more than 150 events on offer has something for everyone.
Of particular interest to heritage professionals is the free ‘ACT Heritage Council presents series’ at Hotel Kurrajong each Tuesday during the Festival. Prof Nicholas Brown, Professor of History at the ANU presents ‘What is distinctive in Canberra’s Heritage?’ (19 April). Dr Kenneth Heffernan, Chair of the ACT Heritage Council, will speak about urban archaeology for inquisitive Canberrans (26 April).
Cultural heritage students will find a range of events that explore heritage practice: ‘Uncovering Ginninderry’ with Dr Mary Hutchison (21 April) ; ‘Caring for Old Textiles’ with Victoria Pearce (23 April); and behind-the-scenes tours and information sessions with ACT Heritage Library and Territory Records Office.
The festival has tripled its First Nations heritage events, with 21 opportunities for Canberrans to explore the rich Ngunnawal history in the territory. Learn Ngunnawal greetings and children’s songs with the Winanggaay Ngunnawal Language Aboriginal Corporation, Ngunnawal Night Tales at Mulligan’s Flat (23 April), visit the oldest heritage site in the ACT, the Birrigai Rock Shelter (13 April), and ‘Experience Namarag’, with a day of story-telling and performance at the ACT’s newest park reserve, Namarag – ‘wattle’ in Ngunnawal language (23 April).
And there are so many more events that showcase our region’s rich intangible, archaeological, and geological heritage through immersive, art and digital heritage experiences. Click here for more information and to view the whole program.

Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action | call for proposals | closes 7 May
FAR-First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis, a flagship Programme of ICCROM, is pleased to invite project proposals for its next multi-level capacity development project Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action.
Net Zero is an 18-month project (July 2022 – 31 December 2023) which aims to enhance risk reduction and coping capacities of vulnerable heritage communities. It sets to implement field projects at five innovation sites, in five risk-prone countries, using heritage to mitigate climate change, as well as reduce the risks of disasters and conflicts. The field experience will feed into an international training of change agents and community leaders. A final international symposium and publication will act as catalysts to inform policy and expand the outreach of the project by sharing the know-how on heritage for climate action in 25-30 countries suffering from acute environmental stresses.
Proposals are invited from institutions and organizations which are highly motivated and have worked on successfully implementing projects on cultural heritage safeguard, sustainable development, disaster risk reduction and/or climate action. Additionally, we encourage applications from organizations working in regions suffering from acute environmental stresses, visible in the form of frequent extreme hazard events and/or climate-driven conflicts.
