GA2023 Patrons and Partners Launch
The thunderheads parted in Sydney last Monday afternoon to allow the sun to shine on the Patrons and Partners Launch for GA2023 at the beautiful Sydney Mint. Nathan Moran, the CEO of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, offered a generous welcome to Gadigal land and Nathan articulated a strong challenge to the GA to intervene in hard-to-shift racist concepts in our society by furthering knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures. The event, which was very well attended, was graciously hosted by Sydney Living Museums and CEO Adam Lindsay also welcomed patrons and partners and committed the ongoing support of his organisation.
The significant government support for the GA was reinforced in the speech given by the Hon James Griffin, MP, NSW Minister for Environment and Heritage, who has kindly allowed us to publish his remarks in full in this e-news. Australia ICOMOS acknowledges the significant financial contribution to the GA of both the NSW and Australian governments, as well as the substantial in-kind support of Heritage New South Wales; Sydney Living Museums; the Sydney Opera House; and the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service. It was exciting to hear so many diverse voices join in expressing the power and potential of heritage to support communities in building shared futures and weathering troubled times.
Richard Mackay took to the podium to outline the wonderful GA programs and events that are now well developed, and Richard also stood in for Scientific Symposium co-chair Steve Brown (who sadly could not attend) to describe the global breadth and coverage of the Scientific Symposium’s themes and objectives.
For me it was wonderful to catch up with many Australia ICOMOS colleagues who I have not seen in person for some time, and to meet many new supporters of the GA. Congratulations to Richard and the team at Arinex for a stunning event to mark the start of our journey together on the road to the GA2023.

20th Century Heritage Society | The Many Treasures of Macquarie Street | walking tour with Dr Roy Lumby | Sydney | 27 March, 11am
Macquarie Street was the site of Sydney’s first permanent public buildings, and intended as a ceremonial thoroughfare by Governor Macquarie. It was a fashionable address during the nineteenth century, and became the focus of Sydney’s medical profession. Its history is reflected in the buildings that line it – among them major public institutions, and significant examples of twentieth century architecture. It is also the site of some of Sydney’s most distinctive civic adornments.
This will be an opportunity to explore the riches of a most important street, guided by a heritage architect and historian. There are examples of modernism, art deco and other twentieth century building styles.
Dr. Roy Lumby PhD is a respected authority on the 1920s and 1930s. He completed his Master of Architecture degree by thesis entitled: An Architecture of Business: Sydney’s Office Buildings of the 1920s and 1930s.
DATE: Sunday 27 March 2022
TIME: 11am
MEET: Outside Hyde Park Barracks
COST: $20 members / $30 non-members
