NEW ITEM: Have your say on proposed changes to Queensland’s cultural heritage laws | deadline 31 March
The Queensland Government is seeking responses to proposed changes to the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage Act 2003.
Public feedback will help to make sure these laws provide strong, effective protection for our state’s rich cultural heritage and work well for the benefit of all Queenslanders.
This consultation is a key step in finalising the review of Queensland’s cultural heritage laws. The proposed changes are based on feedback from earlier stages of the review and priorities for improving the way Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage is managed and protected.

NEW ITEM: ACAHUCH Reading Group | Session 1 | 16 February, 1.00-2.00 pm AEDT
ACAHUCH invites you to join the 2022 ACAHUCH reading group. This scholarly reading group seeks to inspire critical dialogue on cities, architecture, planning, landscapes and their histories.
Our theme for this semester is reconstruction; focusing on past moments of optimism, aspiration and anticipation during and following crises.
Each session a guest discussant suggests a few readings that attend loosely or directly to our theme, gives a very brief introduction to the readings, then acts as provocateur in the group discussion. The group meets every three weeks on a Wednesday between 1pm and 2pm during the semester. The first couple of meetings will take place on zoom. Thereafter we hope to meet in person at the Parkville campus of the University of Melbourne.
We are very fortunate to have Professor Julie Willis lead the inaugural session of the group on 16th February 2022. On 9th March Professor Robert Freestone from UNSW will lead. Further sessions will be held on 30th March, 20th April, 11 May and 1 June.

NEW ITEM: ‘Australian architecture: a history’ | online talk | Dr Davina Jackson | 17 February, 12.30-1.30pm AEDT
Join Dr Davina Jackson as she surveys the evolution of Australian architecture – from Aboriginal gunyahs to 21st century eco-pavilions. Davina will look at the work of colonial designers like Bloodworth, Greenway and Archer, and how they interpreted European styles using local stone and timber. Her journey will culminate with 20th-century luminaries including the Griffins, Harry Seidler, Jørn Utzon, John Andrews, Glenn Murcutt and John Wardle.

NEW ITEM: Revival: Labassa’s Conservatory | private viewing | 27 February, 2.00-3.30
The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) invite heritage professionals to ‘Revival: Labassa’s Conservatory’ for a private viewing of the conservatory, recently restored to heritage standards. The viewing will be of special interest to professional architects, conservationists, historians and ICOMOS members.
The conservatory was built as part of an extensive reworking of the Labassa estate in 1890. A talk on the restoration project by architect David Wixted (Heritage Alliance) will be followed by a viewing of the conservatory. The afternoon will conclude with a tour of Labassa mansion, highlighting recent conservation works.

NEW ITEM: ‘Revival after a disaster, the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral and of Shurijo Castle’ | virtual exhibition and symposium | 14 +15 March
At the initiative of Toshiyuki Kono, Executive Vice President of Kyūshū University of Fukuoka in Japan, former President of ICOMOS, and in cooperation with ICOMOS France and invited experts from the CNRS and the University of Paris-Sorbonne, a virtual exhibition, “Revival after a disaster, the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral and of Shurijo Castle” has been created on the theme of post-traumatic reconstruction of heritage sites.
This virtual exhibition will be launched during a two half-day symposium, on 14 and 15 March 2022, from 8:30 am to 1 pm, by videoconference. This symposium will be an opportunity to draw parallels between Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral in Paris and Shurijo Castle in Naha, Japan, both burned down in 2019 and both inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The conference will be held exclusively in French and Japanese; a video with English subtitles will be made available on Youtube in the following weeks.

The International Specialised Skills Institute has 4 fellowships currently open for applications.
Open until the 8th of April is the VET International Practitioner Fellowships that are available to VET practitioners who are employed within Victorian Government contracted Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), including TAFEs, private RTOs and Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board registered Learn Local Providers.
Secondly, the Mason Family Trust Fellowship that focuses on skills acquisition in areas of music, traditional arts and the art of stained-glass painting is open for application until the 25th of March. Also open for applications until the 25th of March is the Palladio and Italian Australian Foundation Fellowships.

Expressions of interest are invited for four volunteer positions as Australia Theme Co-Chairs and three volunteer positions as Crosscutting Topic Coordinators for the Scientific Symposium to be held between 4 and 8 September 2023 as part of the 21st Triennial General Assembly of ICOMOS (GA2023) in Sydney, Australia. The overarching theme of GA2023 is HERITAGE CHANGES.
Expressions of Interest are encouraged from energetic, experienced, and engaged Australia ICOMOS members who have suitable personal attributes, skills, and experience, including: a mix of appropriate practice-based and academic credentials; good connections within the heritage sector; experience in conducting similar events and processes; a combination of creative and critical skills, team leadership, and demonstrated commitment to inclusiveness, ethical conduct and the principles of the Burra Charter; as well as the necessary time and energy. Previous roles as part of the GA2020 Scientific Symposium organisation will be taken into account.

Ngā Pūtahitanga / Crossings: A Joint Conference of SAHANZ and the Australasian UHPH Group, hosted by the School of Architecture and Planning, University of Auckland, 24-27 November 2022.
This joint conference serves as the 39th annual conference of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand (SAHANZ) and the 16th conference of the Australasian Urban History / Planning History (UHPH) Group. The conference will explore matters of common interest to both groups. We seek papers that examine historical moments demonstrating overlap, collaboration, tension or dispute between built environment disciplines, including architecture, planning, urban design, landscape architecture and heritage conservation.

Change Over Time: An International Journal of Conservation and the Built Environment is pleased to announce the call for abstracts for our forthcoming issue on Material Matters.
This issue of Change Over Time examines the rise of material studies and its enduring influence on how we perceive, understand, interpret, and ultimately conserve our historic built environments. The topic is of particular relevance today as we debate the embodied values of our built heritage and justify the retention of existing buildings and places in the context of social equity, environmental justice, and climate change.

International Conference on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions | Kyoto, Japan | 12-15 September 2023 | call for abstracts | deadline 30 June
The 13th edition of the International Conference on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions (SAHC 2023) will take place during 12-15 September 2023 in Kyoto, Japan. Twelve editions of the SAHC conference have been held since it was started in Barcelona in 1995. The last edition, celebrated in 2021 and attended by more than 300 experts, signaled the 25th anniversary of the conference series.
The 13th SAHC conference will be held at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University in Japan. Following the previous editions, SAHC2023 will combine oral presentations with a number of thematic sessions hosted by internationally recognized speakers. You can find the invitation flyer here.
Submission of abstracts for SAHC 2023 is open. Authors are invited to submit a one page abstract before June 30, 2022. Registration and submission of abstracts should be performed online. The conference proceedings (including full papers only) will be submitted for indexation in the Data Citation Index – Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) and in SCOPUS database. Heritage Council Victoria seeking applications for membership | deadline 25 February
The Heritage Council of Victoria is an independent statutory authority, with advisory and regulatory functions, made up of ten members and up to ten alternate members from a range of specified, heritage-related disciplines.
The Council is seeking applications from Aboriginal persons, architectural professionals, and archaeology professionals who wish to serve on the Council. On this occasion applications are sought for four vacancies:
- A person with recognised skills or expertise in architectural conservation and/or architectural history to be a member of the Heritage Council of Victoria;
- A person with recognised skills or expertise in architectural conservation and/or architectural history to be an alternate member of the Heritage Council of Victoria;
- An Aboriginal person who has relevant experience or knowledge of cultural heritage to be an alternate member of the Heritage Council of Victoria;
- A person with recognised skills or expertise in archaeology to be an alternate member of the Heritage Council of Victoria.
These appointments will commence in July 2022 and will be for a three-year term.

Victorian Government Living Heritage Grants Program | Applications open 1 February to 31 March
Safeguarding and reactivating our heritage
Applications for Round 7 of the Victorian Government’s competitive community Living Heritage Grants Program are now open and close on 31 March 2022.
Eligible applicants may apply for an amount between $20,000 and $200,000 per project, to fund conservation works to ‘at risk’ places and objects included in the Victorian Heritage Register. Places and objects must be publicly accessible, and a significant community benefit anticipated.

National Trust (VIC) Heritage Conservation Workshops | Introduction to Timber, and Sash Windows (22 & 24 February) | Repointing Mortar Joints at Como House (25 March)
The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is hosting two upcoming workshops as part of an initiative to demonstrate best conservation practice and create meaningful learning opportunities for trades, professionals and the general public. Come along and learn from experienced instructors and heritage professionals.
Workshop: Introduction to Timber, and Sash Windows
When: 22 & 24 February
This workshop will cover an introduction to working with timber, a brief history of the sash window and an overview of the construction, installation and repair of sash windows. The session will end with a Q and A with the instructor, Ian Goddard, who is a joiner with many years’ experience both in Australia and the United Kingdom where he did his training. As this event is mostly lecture based, no prior skills are required to attend.

Workshop – Repointing Mortar Joints at Como House
When: 25 March
This workshop will allow you the opportunity to repoint mortar joints at Como House in South Yarra under the direction of a heritage professional. Workshop includes the provision of PPE including gloves and eye protection.
Outcomes will include:
- Awareness of the Health and Safety issues involved in the pointing works
- Familiarity with lime, sand and aggregate selection processes
- Practical awareness of materials preparation and use including tool handling
- Heritage philosophy as to the extent of pointing intervention

REQUEST FOR TENDER: Heritage Consultant Services: Conservation Management Plan | Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority | deadline 17 February
The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA), in conjunction with the National Trust Tasmania, is proposing to prepare a Conservation Management Plan to guide the future management and conservation of the Hobart Penitentiary Chapel site, located at 98A Campbell Street, Hobart.
PAHSMA invites tenders from suitably qualified and experienced Heritage Consultants. The successful tenderer will need to review existing documentation, undertake desktop research, and complete stakeholder consultation to produce an applicable and effective heritage management document.

About the roles
We have a range of opportunities for archaeologists of all levels of experience and technical expertise. We are also interested in hearing from archaeologists with specialist skills. We can offer roles to suit your availability and preferences. A range of contracts are on offer, including casual, temporary, full-time, part-time and ongoing.
At a minimum you will have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline, a passion for Australian archaeology, and a desire to work on large-scale high profile archaeology projects.
We are particularly keen to hear from field and project archaeologist who are looking for excellent contracts.
About the projects
GML will commence several archaeological projects in Parramatta, Sydney and Western Sydney in 2022. The works are components of large-scale, significant projects.
The sites have potential for significant archaeology associated with convict and early colonial settlement, and nineteenth domestic, commercial and industrial archaeology. There is also potential for significant Aboriginal archaeology.
The archaeological projects are starting in March 2022, ongoing throughout the year and into 2023.
There will be several intakes of archaeologists over this time.
