ICOMOS Executive Committee Member Christoph Machat to receive Georg Dehio Prize 2009

Christoph Machat, ICOMOS Executive Committee member and Vice-President of ICOMOS Germany, is to receive the Georg Dehio Prize (Georg Dehio-Kulturpreis) in October 2009. The prize is awarded by the German Cultural Forum for Eastern Europe (Deutsches Kulturforum ostliches Europa).

The Jury recognized Christoph Machat's lifelong commitment to and achievements in researching, documenting and preserving the architectural heritage of Transylvania (Siebenburgen). Under his leadership, the Cultural Council of Transylvania-Saxony documented the entirety of German-influenced Cultural Landscapes in Transylvania. The resulting bilingual (German/Romanian) series of publications "Topography of Monuments in Transylvania" ("Denkmaltopographie zu Siebenburgen"), which was edited by Mr. Machat, played a decisive role in the preservation of the historic monuments of Saxony and Transylvania and can be considered exemplary for other regions in Middle- and Eastern Europe.

Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC): 10th World Congress: Revitalization of Historical Centers

7-14 September, Quito (Ecuador)

The revitalization of historical cities goes beyond the preservation and conservation of their fabric. It requires a process that takes into account all the cultural values embedded in the spatial and physical components of the place, and involves residents and all the relevant participants from the public and private sectors to ensure the appropriate and sustainable conservation and development of the historic centres.

The 10th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities will examine the pivotal role of heritage conservation and social engagement as a catalyst for urban regeneration and revitalization and for the development of sustainable solutions to secure lively and liveable cities.

To articulate the theme the organizers of the Congress have developed a program that includes four keynote presentations, several small group discussions centred on questions raised by the presentations, a poster session featuring case study analyses related to the Congress' theme, and activities for a select group of university students in Quito, who will contribute their ideas in the context of the 10th Congress' host city.
