3) Presentation: Managing the landscape of New Caledonia’s convict heritage

Tuesday 16 th October
from 4:30pm

Managing the landscape of New Caledonia’s convict heritage

Presenters: Dr Anita Smith, Project Manager, Heritage Victoria and Kristal Buckley, International Vice-President, ICOMOS

Between 1864 and the turn of the 20th century France transported around 30 000 prisoners to the Pacific Island of New Caledonia to people the French colony. This has created a landscape of colonial enterprise that offers the possibility for understanding the evolving social and economic relationships of the convict system through the built, landscape and archaeological features evident across the Southern Province of Le Grande Terre and Island of Pines.

In this seminar we present the findings of initial field research in 2004 investigating the convict heritage of New Caledonia. A small number of the standing and ruinous structures of the convict era are the focus of tourist interest and limited conservation activities. The vast majority are relatively unknown, having been incorporated into more recent structures or hidden by vegetation. We propose that tangible evidence of New Caledonia's convict past provides an opportunity for a holistic landscape-based approach to conserving and interpreting this heritage in the context of the evolving national heritage of this French external territory.

There is no entry charge and everyone is welcome

Venue: The Blue Room, Building B Room 2.20, Deakin University

10) Cultural Heritage and the Impacts of Climate Change

Survey Deadline Extended to 15th November 2007
Australia ICOMOS Survey of heritage research and investigations related to Climate Change and Cultural Heritage

We have decided to extend the time frame for our survey into research and applied projects relating to Climate Change and Cultural Heritage. Thank you to all those who have already completed and returned the questionnaire. It appears the questionnaire is finding its way to people outside ICOMOS who are undertaking relevant research and we hope to capture more of this work in our survey. Please distribute the questionnaire widely to Australian colleagues in related disciplines. This information will be extremely useful in understanding the range of work being undertaken and in identifying gaps in investment in this area.

This survey is being co-ordinated by Susan McIntyre-Tamwoy. All members of Australia ICOMOS should now have a copy of the survey and it is hoped that you will fill it out and return it promptly. It will only take about 5-10mins of your time. In addition it would be appreciated if you could circulate the questionnaire to any one that you think might be interested or who has been involved in relevant work. Completed questionnaires can be forwarded to Susan at fax 0740421380 or scanned and emailed to susan.mcintyretamwoy@jcu.edu.au .
