Michele Bird

Michele is an archaeologist with 22 years experience in indigenous cultural heritage management in northern Australia. She is currently the Director of the Townsville based consulting company, North QLD Cultural Heritage Pty Ltd. She was formerly a Director of Northern Archaeology Consultancies Pty Ltd, over some 17 years.

Michele has extensive experience in undertaking indigenous site surveys and cultural heritage assessments over a broad area of North Queensland. Her client base includes local, state and Commonwealth governments, corporate bodies, indigenous organisations and private developers. Over the duration of her career Michele has developed a broad-based working knowledge of the regional archaeological record in the wider North Queensland region. She has established working relationships and rapport with many Aboriginal organisations and Traditional Owner groups throughout her work region.

Michele maintains a passion for archaeology and indigenous heritage management, as well as a strong commitment to indigenous reconciliation. She strives to achieve a best practice approach to indigenous cultural heritage management. She has research interests in coastal archaeology and specifically indigenous maritime adaptations in the tropical coastal environment.

In addition to her membership of ICOMOS, Michele is a member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc, the Australian Archaeological Association, World Archaeological Congress and the Australasian Society of Historical Archaeology.
