Thank you to all Australia ICOMOS members who have renewed their membership thus far – it is much appreciated. Please note that membership renewals will not be processed during the above time period, but publication orders where credit card details are provided will be.

The E-news will still be published. Please ensure all submissions for the E-news are submitted by 2pm Thursdays – this deadline will be strictly adhered to.

Though the Secretariat will be staffed intermittently, responses to queries, etc may take longer than usual.

3. Mudgee Regional Tour – September to October 2012

Three day event – Labor Day Long Weekend – Saturday 29 September to Monday 1 October

Join the Twentieth century Heritage Society of NSW on another of our insightful annual expeditions to a regional town. Talks, walks, dinners and drives in the company of those who appreciate the architectural and design heritage of the Twentieth Century. We look forward to your company on this interesting tour.

4. Prince Claus Fund Accepting Proposals

The Prince Claus Fund welcomes project proposals that focus on providing first aid to heritage or cultural goods that have been damaged by natural disaster or conflict in the year 2012. Also eligible for funding under this call are measures to protect cultural heritage that is under imminent threat of destruction.

Through its Cultural Emergency Response (CER) programme, the Prince Claus Fund provides first aid to stabilise a situation until a longer term solution can be found. CER supports quick actions to rescue cultural heritage, aims to prevent further damage and carries out basic repairs. CER implements its cultural emergency relief actions in direct cooperation with local partners in the affected communities.

Submissions deadline: 1 October 2012. Proposals received after this date shall be processed in 2013. Given the emergency character of the work we would like to ask you to send in proposals as soon as possible.

Submitted proposals need to meet the following requirements:

  • The proposed measures correspond to needs that are caused by recent disaster or conflict.
  • The project proposal will be implemented by a local partner from the affected community or closely related to it.
  • A project can only be considered if the proposed actions are in agreement with and involving the surrounding community
  • The proposal focuses on concrete emergency measures to safeguard or protect material heritage in danger of being lost Information is provided on follow up measures that will sustain the proposed emergency measures
  • The budget does not exceed an amount of 35.000,- euro per proposed project

Support is primarily given to people and organisations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

CER cannot take proposals into consideration that address long term neglect or address privately owned properties. The Prince Claus Fund tries to process all requests for emergency aid to cultural heritage as quickly as possible but it can take up to a few months in case the Fund receives a great number of proposals. Please note that project proposals are processed in the same order they are received.

6. “Digging up the Relatives” Talk, Sydney

Digging up the Relatives: David Walker talks to Ruth Balint about family, history, memory and much more

In 2004, David Walker became legally blind forcing him to rethink the kinds of writing that were still available to him. His recent book, Not Dark Yet: a personal history (Giramondo, 2011) explores the interconnections between family, local and national histories. The book draws upon the unassuming and largely undocumented lives of an ‘ordinary’ middle class family to explore some of the big pre-occupations of our history: bush and city, belonging, discipline, gender, race, war and the home. As witty as the book often is, the darker undercurrents of loss, prejudice, violence and dementia haunt the text.

David Walker is Alfred Deakin Professor of Australian Studies at Deakin University and a pioneer in the field of Australian Studies.

Postgrads, professional historians and members of the public are particularly welcome. Wine and snacks will be served, and we will adjourn for early dinner nearby after the presentation. 7. Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific Seminar, Deakin University (VIC)

Deakin University’s next Cultural Heritage seminar will be held on Wednesday 26 September. Dr Benjamin Isakhan will be speaking on ‘Heritage Destruction and Violence in Iraq: Bombing Mosques and Ethno-Sectarian Violence, 2006-7’.

Since the invasion of 2003, Iraq has suffered an extraordinary era of both heritage destruction and devastating spikes in violence. While cases such as the 2003 attacks on the Iraq National Museum and the Iraq National Library and Archive, as well as the systematic looting of Iraq’s sensitive archaeological sites, understandably caused outrage among scholars of heritage studies across the world, little attention has been paid to the destruction of Iraq’s many significant Islamic sites – particularly during the ethno-religious sectarian violence that raged across the nation in 2006-7. This paper presents the first results of a three year project funded by the Australian Research Council which aims to empirically test the assumption that a significant relationship exists between this spike in violence and the targeting of sites of Islamic heritage (mosques, shrines, etc.). To do this, the paper will compare and contrast the information in the world’s first database of heritage destruction (created by the author) and existing measures of violence in Iraq (such as the Iraq Body Count database). This will set the precedent for studies of both heritage and violence and enable policy formation towards the minimization of heritage destruction and spikes in violence during times of conflict.

Dr Benjamin Isakhan is Australian Research Council Discovery (DECRA) Research Fellow at the Centre for Citizenship and Globalization at Deakin University, Australia. Previously, Ben was Research Fellow at the Centre for Dialogue at La Trobe University and Research Fellow for the Griffith University Islamic Research Unit, affiliated with the National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies, Australia. Dr Isakhan is the author of Democracy in Iraq: History, Politics and Discourse (Ashgate, 2012). Ben is also the editor of The Secret History of Democracy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012 [2011]), The Arab Revolutions in Context: Civil Society and Democracy in a Changing Middle East (Melbourne University Press, 2012) and The Edinburgh Companion to the History of Democracy (Edinburgh University Press & Columbia University Press, 2012). In addition, Ben has authored several publications including around 15 scholarly book chapters, 12 refereed journal articles and more than 20 refereed conference papers. Broadly, his research interests concern issues such as: Democracy in Iraq, the history of democracy and Middle Eastern politics and history. Ben’s current research includes the ARC-funded project ‘Measuring the Destruction of Heritage and Spikes of Violence in Iraq’ (DE120100315) which involves several field trips to Iraq.

15. Port Arthur Talks on September 13

‘Assessing the past: 35 years of archaeological collections at Port Arthur’
Presented by Jeanne Harris and Sylvana Szydzik

Archaeological investigations at Port Arthur began in 1977 with excavation of the Prisoners’ Barracks by Sydney University graduate student Maureen Byrne. Over the next 35 years, 600 archaeological projects have been undertaken by Port Arthur archaeologists and outside contractors. This talk presents a summary of the preliminary findings of the 2012 Collections Assessment Project, and future plans for the collections. We will discuss the interesting projects and artefacts rediscovered during this assessment and unfortunately, the sad condition of some of the early collections.

16. The Garden of Ideas Exhibition, New South Wales

The Garden of Ideas national touring exhibition sponsored by the Australian Garden History Society is on show at the Red Box Gallery, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. This exhibition explores the ideas behind garden design imported into Australia in the 18th and 19th centuries, and local evolution and additions to these.

It features original archival plans, photographs, objects and rare books, such as books of James Jones, superintendent of the Botanic Gardens Sydney who visited Paris in the 1870s for its great exhibition, noting French park design and management of the era, which was innovative.

Entry is down the ramp off Mrs Macquarie’s Road, near the Woolloomooloo Gates to the gardens (and the land bridge and the Art Gallery of NSW). Five minutes’ stroll from Martin Place or Macquarie Street.

This conference seeks to engage in an open multi-disciplinary analysis of iron and steel landscapes and cultures, from the ancient to the modern. It looks toward the legacies of both production and consumption and how these metals have influenced all aspects of social life. We wish to explore the relationships that communities, regions, nations share with iron and steel through its functional use, creative and artistic use and its symbolic use. Indicative questions the conference will address are: How are economies and societies transformed by the extraction and processing of iron? How does the environmental impact and legacy of iron and steel sites shape social and political life? How do governments and communities deal with both the expansion and decline of the iron and steel industries? What are the forms and formats of regeneration for iron and steel landscapes and communities? To what extent are global communities connected through iron and steel, economically and culturally? How have the landscapes and cultures of iron and steel found expression through various art forms? How are these landscapes managed and understood?

The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) is hosting its 44th annual conference in Providence, Rhode Island, May 29-June 1, 2013 in partnership with the School of Architecture, Art and Historic Preservation at Roger Williams University. We are broadly inviting submissions that address the intersection of environmental design and behavior and the built environment. More specifically, however we encourage submissions of proposals that address the identification and conservation of aspects of historic environments that positively influence multiple dimensions of health (e.g., physical, psychological).

22. SITUATION VACANT Peleliu Battlefield National Historic Landmark Project – call for proposals

The Palau Historic Preservation Office is calling for proposals for the Peleliu Battlefield National Historic Landmark Project.

Timeframe

The work of this Scope of Work shall be performed from approximately 1 October 2012 through 30 September 2013.

Location

Field investigation specified in this contract will be located at Peleliu Battlefield National Historic Landmark, located 30 miles south of Koror, Republic of Palau, in the Pacific. Access to the site will be provided by the governor of Peleliu through the Historic Preservation Office of Palau.

Background Summary

Peleliu Battlefield includes all of Peleliu Island which is in the southern Palau Islands. Peleliu is 30 miles south of Koror of the Republic of Palau, and 500 miles east of the Philippine Islands. It is six miles in length and two miles in width. Today, its people live primarily in two villages which were reconstructed after WW II, Klouklubed (the capital) and Imelchol, both near the north end of the island.

Project Tasks

This project will provide physical descriptions and condition assessments for seven building sites, some of which contain more than one structure (see attachment #1 for Building Descriptions). As part of this condition assessment the project will also provide preservation recommendations that will:

  1. identify any safety concerns in need of immediate attention to insure visitor safety
  2. make recommendations for treatment that will arrest conditions that contribute to the continued deterioration of these structures
  3. make recommendations for treatments to these structures in their current ruin state that will provide for their long-term preservation and in meeting future interpretive desires

The Environmental Officer is primarily responsible for facilitating project environment approvals and operational compliance activities across portfolio properties and other ad-hoc properties. You will be required to provide advice on environmental issues, including remediation and contamination, statutory obligations and manage providers delivering these services.
