8. Shared Built Heritage ISC – new website and conference announcement

The International Scientific Committee on Shared Built Heritage (SBH) has a new website – http://sbh.icomos.org

They are also organising a scientific conference – New life for historic cultural landscapes: examples of creative policy plans – to be held in conjunction with their annual meeting. This will take place Suriname, on 18-23 October 2010. For further information, click here.

This will be the first meeting of the Committee in the Latin American/Caribbean region and they encourage people from the western hemisphere to participate.

The focus of the conference will be on the former plantation structures around Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. This is just an example of the many former colonial plantations around the world that are in a position of change. Production of sugar, coffee, cotton and other tropical products have changed. The former plantations offer a wide variety of historical cultural elements (buildings, landscape, and even traditions, genealogy, songs, beliefs) that are part of the identity of the people of the country involved. Can these plantations can be (re)used in a way that part of this culture and identity will be preserved?

Papers on the conference themes, especially examples from other countries, are most welcome. Please contact the SBH ISC secretary at the address below.

The conference is open to all ICOMOS SBH ISC members and for all professionals working with and interested in the topics.

11. New Masters in Heritage Science, University College London

The Centre for Sustainable Heritage is delighted to announce a new Masters in Heritage Science, to start in September 2010 at the University College London

The course will cater for interdisciplinary Masters students and for heritage professionals with several years experience and demonstrable aptitude for research. It will be delivered in four 14-day blocks, and can be taken either as full time or part time.

The fifth and final module, the Masters Dissertation, can be taken as a placement, to carry out a piece of research that is particularly relevant to heritage institutions. This will hopefully allow enough flexibility for candidates to attend the course, as well.
